User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0
Build ID: 20160607113630

Steps to reproduce:

When opening the context menu, items that should be a submenu have no indication unless you hover with you mouse on the item.

I expect this to be related to Bug #1264079, or Bug #1234158 for that matter.

Actual results:

See the non-hover screenshot. There should be a ">" at the right hand side behind "Web developer".

Expected results:

See the hover screenshot. There's a ">" at the right hand side behind "Web developer" visible now.

By stating it's related to those bugs I mean that I'm on Ubuntu 16.04 with GNOME 3.20 and therefore GTK 3.20 as well.

Can you try tonight's nightly? 50.0a1 build? I believe this was fixed today.
Depends on: 1276534
I'd love to try it, but building the lot from source is not a trivial matter. Since it's three releases ahead (47-50) it will also take some time before it will appear in the beta PPA [1] for Ubuntu. I'll be happy to come back to the issue as soon as the daily PPA [2] has yesterday's build. For some reason it has, what looks like, a 2 days delay.

I was not asking you to build the lot from source but to test the official nightly binary available at nightly.mozilla.org to see if this is at least fixed by what is in the current Firefox 50 tree. I realize that might not help you that much but if we have a patch for it, it might be easier for us to point the Ubuntu Firefox team to how to get this into Ubunto erlier.
It's fixed in latest trunk. I believe it's a variation of Bug 1276534
