This looks like bug 1386643 to me. Please check if it's fixed on today's nightly.

I tested with Nightly 57 (2017-08-11) and if I hover the mouse over tabs the text from URL bar, search bar and tabs titles is changed.

I'll add the photon tracking stuff back to avoid this getting lost, but this looks like a graphics issue to me. I can't reproduce. Markus, do you have any ideas?
Ovidiu, does this reproduce on all osx machines you have access to? Which version of OSX was the test recorded on?

The recorder is made on Mac OS X 10.10 but I just retested on Mac OS X 10.12 and I can reproduce it.

This is separate from the selected tab issue. It deserves its own bug.

I have exact same issue of bug 1389476 on Windows10. I can see it on LinuxMint 18.2 also. (two Intel HD Graphics machines)
STR:
1. Open multiple tabs
2. Move mouse on inactive tab
AR:
Font of tab title, urlbar, search text becomes a bit different shape(rendering) and back to normal quickly.
ER:
No such blur.
mozregression tells Pushlog:
https://hg.mozilla.org/integration/autoland/pushloghtml?fromchange=ecbeb9354c24bac41419cfbd71ce107f86ea4619&tochange=975e4a8c3e3e83af2ac54fa3691861f79186b48f
If following style is applied with userChrome.css, this issue doesn't occur.
.tab-line:not([selected=true]) {
transition: none !important;
}
BTW, this doesn't occur when gfx.webrender.enabled;true, it's OT though...

May I ask for a status update? It's a super annoying bug in one of the most important parts of the browser UI (the tabs!) and I can't see any progress since two weeks.

ni? :mstange because another week has passed, this ticket already has five duplicates and there are only three weeks left until Firefox 57 reaches Beta.

I'm going to put patches for this bug up tomorrow. Sorry for the long delay; I was on PTO since Friday, and this bug has a number of interacting pieces (and needs patches for different bugs) that I need some time to untangle.

There is still a strange effect on the favicon, please see the attached video. Is this another bug?

Thanks for the video, unfortunately, I can't reproduce this behavior. Did you try with a new profile, what Mac version do you use? Markus, can you please take a look at Sören attachment from comment 27?

I attached a new video which shows the issue better (it's not only one favicon affected).
It's on OS X 10.11.4. I can try on a new profile later today.

I don't think I can see the favicon effect Sören mentioned, but I do see some similar effect on the widgets at the right side of the tab bar (> for scrolling tab bar, +, and downward arrow for container access). There also seems to be an effect on the dark icon of my right-most pinned tab and maybe the drop shadow on the left-most non-pinned tab? See attached movie.

Sorry about piling up here, I just wanted to post another recording of this where I think it's easy to see the bug.
This is on the latest Nightly, with bug 1386643 fixed.

I am no longer able to reproduce the issue I filed as bug 1390639 (which was then duped to this seemingly-related bug) as of latest Nightly on an OS X retina computer.

Please also try this with a theme that uses a bitmap or something else interesting in the tab bar. Tab bar text uglier than normal.

I can reproduce the flashing favicons issue and filed bug 1401037 for it.
I have not been able reproduce bad quality text rendering with lightweight themes. Joe, could you file a new bug with a link to the theme you're using?
