In bug 1443315, a white flash was avoided by ensuring that the preloaded about:newtab always has its layers loaded in the compositor and ready to roll for an immediate tab switch. Looking at the history of bug 1389546, and bug 1443315, it seems that this flashing problem comes and goes. Now that we've fixed it this time, we should write a flicker regression test to ensure it never regresses again.
