Steps to reproduce:

Start Thunderbird with Master password, but password for mail account, which is connected on startup, is not storred; Thunderbird, MacOSX v68.4.1; no updates pending

Actual results:

Thunderbird asks about the master password, then displays a dialogue box asking to compact the folders and then stalls. The icon of the Inbox is animated; the status line says, that an email account is to be opened, the list of windows mentions a dialogue box to query the email account's password

Expected results:

either let me select either Cancel or Compact in the Compact dialogue box or Enter password of mail account to proceed

So Thunderbird is stuck, such that you are not able to act on both dialogs

Yes. The dialogue box asking about to compact does not react, I cannot Cancel nor Compact. There is no frame to move it around, in order to get to the password dialogue box, which is presumely hidden below it. Neither can I close or minimize the dialogue box.

Oh, I can start the address book with Macosx's sidebar, I can open the "about" box through Thunderbird's main menu, I can open other tabs by clocking on links in the about box; but the main window with the messages, calendar a.s.o remains unavailable, because of the dialogue box.

Actually I remember similiar problems some time ago with SeaMonkey, which opened a number of dialogue boxes (accept cookie or something like that) in the same area, hence overlapping each other, but the topmost one was not responding. Maybe it is framework problem shared among ports to Mac?

Another possible example is Bug 874077 - On Mac, Compact Folders confirmation dialog appears over a black e-mail window, then in a second both dialog and e-mail window disappear
