Summary: If the Compact Folders dialog window (that's actually a dialog *sheet* on Mac OS X) gets triggered at the deletion of an e-mail message opened in its standalone window, the e-mail windows is quickly closed and reopened with a totally black content pane, no buttons in the toolbar and the Compact Folders dialog sheet over it, then in roughly a second both the dialog and the window automatically disappear. When it happens, an invisible "Compact Folders" window appears in the Window menu and compacting is not performed. Notes: The bug gets triggered only if the "Close the window after message deletion" option is set. I reproduced this bug with SeaMonkey 2.18b4 (User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 SeaMonkey/2.18) and Thunderbird 17.0.6. I've been able to reproduce the issue with a local folder (a folder under the Local Folders group) but I failed with an IMAP folder because I've not been able to make the Compact Folders dialog appear. Steps to reproduce (based on SeaMonkey 2.18b4): 1) Set the compacting threshold to 1 MB (or less, if you know how to do it); 2) Fill a local folder with big e-mail messages; 3) Start to open the messages by double clicking on them and delete them one by one by clicking the Delete button in the toolbar of the standalone message window. Actual results: At some point, the Compact Folders dialog sheet will pop up over a message window with a totally black content pane and no buttons in the toolbar. After roughly a second both the dialog and the window automatically disappear. Expected results: The e-mail message window is closed and the Compact Folders dialog appears over the main application (SeaMonkey or Thunderbird) window.

Yes, I've successfully reproduced this issue on SeaMonkey 2.46 and Thunderbird 45.6.0 running on OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite.

Andrea, Are you on OS X 10.9 or newer, and still see this using a newer version 52 or 60?

Hi Wayne,
I'm sorry for the long absence.
I still see this bug on SeaMonkey 2.53.2 and Thunderbird 68.8.0, both on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G13027).
I can try on the latest macOS, too, if it helps.

Thanks for the update. Yes, that would help.

I've managed to reproduce the issue on macOS Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287) with both SeaMonkey 2.53.2 and Thunderbird 68.8.0, too.
Curiously, only on Thunderbird, to reproduce the issue while deleting the messages in the local folder I had to remove the IMAP account I previously configured to fill the local folder with some e-mails. Before removing the IMAP account, no compact folder dialog would appear at messages deletion (sounds like this might be yet another bug).

Anthony, can you reproduce?

Hi, I'm still reproducing the issue with SeaMonkey 2.53.17 Beta 1 on macOS Ventura 13.5 (22G5059d) Beta 4 Apple Silicon. The only difference is that now the message window becomes transparent for roughly a second instead of black.
However, I've not been able to trigger the problem with Thunderbird 102.12.0 on the same system, so it seems that at least on Thunderbird this bug has been fixed.

Wait a moment Wayne, I've said that this bug is fixed for Thunderbird but it's NOT fixed for SeaMonkey.

Yes, please.
I created this bug for an issue that was present on both SeaMonkey and Thunderbird and I don’t know when it became a Thunderbird-only bug.
