Details

This is a feature tracking bug. Please let me know if we should use a separate bug for news. The account setup spec currently shows a decision (in its Closed Issues section) to have a default mail account and a default news account in seamonkey. Alecf indicated via email to me this would be in seamonkey at some point. I've written bug #16243 to cover migration from 4.x, but we need feature work in seamonkey to implement default servers, including method of exposing the feature in the UI and letting us know rules-of-use. I'm not sure how alec's comments in bug #8053 fit in with all this...

nope, decision has been made. we're not doing any default servers other than Local Folders, which we already do. Marking WONTFIX
Verified Wontfix.

I don't understand why this is set to Wontfix because the Mail Spec describes different behavior: The Mail Spec states that for POP or IMAP accounts that the defaults for draft and sent will point to the account folders. If a News account is added then it will default to the Default Mail account. If there is only a News account then it will default to Local Folders. In all cases the default Stationery folder points to Local Folders.

this is almost done - the only work is basic cosmetics to flag an account as a default. taking off feature list.

moving non-critical bugs to M20
Target Milestone: M16 → M20
Reassigning to sspitzer because he knows what we need to do: - use atoms to uniquely flag accounts - i.e. provide a map from an atom -> account - remove the localFoldersServer and defaultAccount attributes from the nsIMsgAccountManager API, and identify those accounts uniquely with an atom - create atoms for the default news server

I am confused. Some 20 months ago, Alec said "this is almost done". Without a default news server we will not be able to use links of the form news:message-id. pi
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/tests/sea-mn-newsgroup-function.html is a testcase that I wrote to demonstrate the default behaviors with our news:// urls (with and without server arguments).

Regarding comment #9: Why not try all servers? Well, but in what order ...
Maybe I miss something in the specs, but I cannot see what to do with news:message-id, i.e., bug 108877. pi

Ben, do you think there is anything left to do here? Having bug 108877 open, it seems to me all is done here (also comment 5).
Flags: needinfo?(ben.bucksch)
No. We have default servers now. NNTP is mostly irrelevant today, so no point in adding a default NNTP server. If we want to open news: URLs, indeed the best way is to try all servers, in order of appearance. Indeed, that's necessary, because if the user has 2 NNTP servers, then probably because they carry different groups. No need of a default server for that.
