Fixed by Bug 187768 ?

442431 was posted by me (didn't spot the duplicate), the significant addition in that bug is to make sure that this works for OSX. I'm not sure if that means that 442431 should be marked as depending on this, or just that testing of any fix for this bug needs to test for OSX mailing lists as well.

Will this bug add the ability to filter by Mailing List in...
Tools / Message Filters / ... / [From] [is in Message Filter] [Family]
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Thunderbird currently only allows filtering by address book, which doesn't work so well with other important functions (e.g., Add to Address Book, Google AB sync).
It would then be useful to be able to add addresses to a Mailing List *quickly* from e.g. the "New Contact" dialog and from the message header pane address context menu.
BTW: I don't understand what this bug is about. What/where is the "AB picker"?

I would also very much like to see this functionality.
I want to setup filters like these:
1. If mail is from someone in my contact list "coworkers", tag message as "work" and move to folder "work".
2. If mail is from someone in "friends" list, tag as "personal".
Why can I not just setup different address books? Why am I saying "contact list" instead of "mailing list"? The reason is I am syncing my address book with my Google Contacts. In Google you can group your contacts into different "contact lists". When syncing TB and GC using this addon*, the Google contact lists are imported into TB as mailing lists. These mailing lists are not available to filter on, only entire address books are.
In reply to comment 12 by Peter:
Setup a new filter, and make the rule condition: From "is in my address book" - now the address book picker is shown as a dropdown to the right. It is nice, but it currently only has entire address books. Would like to see it contain mailing/contact lists as well.

To work around this bug, I've created an addon. This addon works a little awkwardly, because there's IMHO no simple way to change search operators. So I created new search terms "Author from mailing list" and "Recipients from mailing list"; these search terms only allow operators "is in AB/is not in AB", and the dropdown on the right contains address books and mailing lists, too... Et voila, mailing-list--based filtering works :)
Tested only on TB 17 (since another bug doesn't allow me to use 24).

Does not seem to work on TB 24. ...at least Google Groups from gContactSync don't show up.

Are you able to debug what's going on in TB 24? Just put some console.log or alerts to see where it fails? Or is there some output in error console?

I'm still happily using the addon and it works with current TB stable release.

If you can get that submitted and put on the official Addons site, I might try it.
Thanks!

Now it's there (in the review queue ATM): https://addons.thunderbird.net/cs/thunderbird/addon/mailing-list-filter/ . Try it and refer your findings (ideally here or using Github issues on https://github.com/peci1/mailing-list-filter )

The addon has now finished the verification process.

I just sent 102+ and 115+ compatible versions of https://addons.thunderbird.net/cs/thunderbird/addon/mailing-list-filter/ into review queue. Anyone who prefers filtering based on mailing lists can thus use this addon as a workaround.
But I admit I'd be more glad if Thunderbird got this functionality itself.
