It looks like the opposite is happening here R.K. But i couldn't reproduce with the latest nightly+Entourage as my email client. A link *in* mozilla is opening infinte email messages. This is probably due to moz choking on the email obfuscation scheme the site is using - e.g. instead of using a mailto: link the site offers the following link which spawns the new mail window: http://www.z-trading.fi/email/?u=topi&d=z-trading.fi (note: haven't looked at the headers yet to disect what its doing) Reporter: You are using Mozilla's mail client or an external client like Mail.app or Entourage?
here's what the server is sending us back (using request for http://www.z-trading.fi/email/?u=setri&d=z-trading.fi)... I'd assume this bug is an issue with our handling of the Location:mailto:blah@example.com athough again, I haven't reproduced using my external mail client HTTP/1.1 302 Found Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 18:35:03 GMT Server: Apache/1.3.22 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) PHP/4.1.2 X-Powered-By: PHP/4.1.2 X-Accelerated-By: PHPA/1.3.3r1 Location: mailto:setri@z-trading.fi Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html <script language="JavaScript1.1"> <!-- location.replace(""); //--> </script><noscript> <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url="> </noscript> ?>

reporter answering a question: I am using Mozilla's mail client.
ahh I am able to reproduce this easily. It happens when javascript is disabled for the browser. If javascript is enabled, the page reload as the mailcompose window spawns. Reporter: Hafve you set preferences to disable javascript for the browser? (Preferences->Advanced->Scripts & plugins)
OS: MacOS X → All
Hardware: Macintosh → All
confirming, latest trunk CVS, Linux.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Severity: normal → major
Additional answer from the reporter: I have disabled 3 javascript options in the browser: Move or resize existing windows Raise or lower windows Change status bar text I have disabled JavaScript for Mail & Newsgroups. My Build ID is 2003021217 on MacOS 10.2.4
IMHO the scripting code from comment 3 is used to hide the empty browser window that is opened in addition to the mail window. This raises the question, whether opening a browser window on redirecting to mailto: urls is correct behavior. If this behavior itself is a bug, resolution is quite different.

I'm not sure about the dupes. Bug 198547 comment 13 points to a specific problem that causes that bug: having this pref set to True: network.protocol-handler.external.mailto *and* having Mozilla set as the systemwide mailer. So what happens is: Send the mailto event to Mozilla Mozilla checks, and says, Oh, an external handler! I can do that! Mozilla calls Mozilla to handle the mailto event. Lather; rinse; repeat. This bug sounds like a very different problem. Bug 216862 is, I think, a dupe of 198547. (Ignore my comment in 216862, which suggested a different, incorrect bug as a dupe).

I have the same problem I am using foxmail - it is not an infinite number the number is between 60 and 70 and it opens MS Internet Explorer Windows in rapid succession I have 256 of ram and it just may be filling the available memory All that happens is you click on a mailto related email link and this happens
can this actually be fixed in mozilla? STM more likely INVALID or an evangelism issue. see comment 8. Try http://www.z-trading.fi/email/?u=henri&d= with and without js enabled

Hi, I think I've come across the same or similar case. I posted a comment in bug #510009 (comment 6) and from the response I got and my search in bugzilla I guess this must be the right bug. The problem is described here: http://www.symbianize.com/archive/index.php/t-154935.html
Carlos writes that he doesn't see this anymore.

Is this issue still fixed? Disabling mailto from about:config is not the proper solution as thousands of users are using the application containing mailTo as a link. Also disabling mailto do not always work. So please let me know if there is any patch present for this or a workaround using JavaScript?

Reported 15 years ago! Infinite tabs can be particularly nasty and occur if you follow Apple's recommendation for setting Firefox to handle `mailto` links. Leaving this unfixed creates questions on the support forum, here are just a few: - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/666788 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/787559 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/811029 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/944972 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/985737 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1069089 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1159968 - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1187746 I usually avoid quitting my web browser and tend to avoid ones which cause me to do this. In this case that was the only solution! I don't think a knowledgebase article about the bug [1] is a suitable solution. Could we try and detect this and show a warning instead? James: can you please provide information where apple gives that recommendation?

Mirko, it has been a while so I'm not sure where I saw those instructions.

Possibly I was following https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201607 with the intention of using a webmail provider, so the steps would have been:

  • Open the Mail app
  • Menu > Preferences > General
  • Default email reader > Firefox

I'm not currently using OSX so cannot verify, but searching images for "Default email reader" returns other results like https://lifehacker.com/stop-apples-mail-app-from-opening-browser-email-links-i-1796784767.

This might be fixed! I am running 76.0b3 on Windows 10 1909 64-bit build 18363.752 and Firefox is set as my default Mail app in the Windows 10 settings app. I just tried a mailto link from https://www.rapidtables.com/web/html/mailto.html and it opened the "Launch Application" screen. Firefox is already selected, and if I click the "open link" button, nothing happens, which is what we want I guess? It doesn't look to be opening infinite tabs anymore! Yay!

Redirect a needinfo that is pending on an inactive user to the triage owner.
:hsinyi, since the bug has high severity, could you have a look please?

I see the same behavior as comment #20.
The original issue of "infinite tabs" are no longer for me on Fx nightly 103. I'm going to close this original issue.

But still, there is an issue with "open link" button on Firefox. I'll check if we already have an exiting report, otherwise I'll file one.
