Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030228
On replying to a plain text email, [Menu]->Edit-Rewrap is disabled; it should be
enabled, as frequently a rewrap needs to be done. On another machine running
1.3b (build 20030210) this works as I expect it to.
If I start a new message and past text into it, rewrap becomes available.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Reply to any message. Observer Edit->rewrap is not available.
2. Begin a new message. Paste some text into it. Observe Edit->rewrap is available.
Actual Results:
The rewrap function is not available on replying to a message.
Expected Results:
The rewrap function should be available when replying to a message.

I can confirm this using
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030228

Also on Mac OS X 10.2.5/2003030503.

I can confirm that and I'd like to change the severity to "major" as it IS a
major loss of a functionality.
I really wonder that no one seems to be missing this feature :-O.

I definitely think that this is an issue, though at least for me there is an
easy workaround which should NOT be taken to deminish the importance of not
having to apply it.
When replying just hit save and the option rewrap should be available.
*** Bug 197533 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030314.
[CAPS denote buttons.]
When REPLYing to e-mails, rewrap is available only for the first message. Any
subsequent messages replied to cannot be rewrapped as the option is disabled.
I believe that merely hitting COMPOSE, then REPLYing to a message will have the
same effect. However, REWRAP works for any number of COMPOSEs, not REPLYs.
Appending a long unbroken line inside a REPLY still does not reactivate
REWRAP.
I use plain text for messaging as well.
May I second the move to change its severity to Major. This is a big loss of
functionality for someone who receives a lot of unwrapped/poorly wrapped mails
all the time.
Thanks.

third the motion to move to major; also please change to All OS/platform (is OSX
too, and most likely other Unixes).

Hello?!?!
Is anyone going to do something about this bug in this century?!
win32 trunk build 2003032308
Agreed, the disabled rewrap option is a *major* pain in the **** and the
severity should be changed. I believe this bug is also limited to the
plain-text editor. Does anyone see this using the html editor? I don't use the
html editor at all (format=flowed is completely disabled, too), so I wouldn't know.
FWIW, I've just wasted about 10 minutes trying to get a reply to a news post
rewrapped. None of the already suggested work-arounds worked for me, but some
sequence of events that included switching from the plain-text editor to the
html editor (ctrl+click Reply?) and back again magically enabled the option in
the plain-text editor for the next Reply. I'm not sure I could reproduce this
sequence at will - at this point I was hitting/clicking everything in a last
ditch effort before giving up and resorting to manual rewrapping.
Is there a reason why this bug is still "unconfirmed", especially since it
already has a dup? I'd change the status myself if I were authorized to do so.

Using the latest 1.4b build 2003042208 this appears to be fixed, ie Edit->Rewrap
command works OK all the time.

Still doesn't work as expected on 2003042308/Mac OS X 10.2.5.
1) I changed the 'compose' preference to only wrap at 999.
2) I composed an email to myself with this line :
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello
there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello
there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello
there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello
there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello
there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
hello there hello there hello there hello there hello there
3) I sent it.
4) I viewed the email and the line was wrapped to the viewing window's width - I
changed the width of the window to show that the wrapping changes to match the
window width.
5) I reply-all to the email.
6) The line is wrapped when it shouldn't be.
7) I edit the email to make the message a single line again.
8) I select the line.
9) I select Edit/Rewrap
10) nothing happens.
Conclusions :
1) Replying to an email wraps the message when no wrapping has been requested.
2) Rewrap doesn't work, but at least is no longer greyed out.
Am i doing something wrong?
Max.

I attempted to reproduce this bug with 1.4 Final, and I saw it happen once.
This occurred with: Reply, Rewrap, Send, Reply -- menu item deleted.
I tried that same sequence again (after restarting) and it did not occur. I'm
not sure where the difference was -- checking the mail? Typing text into the
message before, or after, Rewrap?
I also tried another sequence (again, after restarting) and did not see the
problem. This was: Reply (to msg 1), Reply (to msg 2), Rewrap #1, Send #1,
Rewrap #2, Reply (to msg 3), Rewrap #3, Send #2, etc...
If anyone has a specific sequence that they can always reproduce the disabled
menu item with 1.4 Final, we can check it against 1.5 (altho that will be easier
once bug 216581 is fixed).

This bug is also present in Thunderbird 1.5b2. The workaround in Thunderbird 1.5b2, at least, is to save the message as a draft, and re-open it. The option then becomes available, however, then the mailbox is clobbered as discussed in bug 268589.

I've encountered this problem periodically, but again I have no specific way
to reproduce it. However, the workaround I've found is simpler than saving: click on Subject and then tab back into the message body -- this has consistently re-enabled the Rewrap menu item, for me.

That works for me, too. It's actually quite a bit faster. Whee.
