User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030308 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030308 I have noticed this since some days that if you download a .exe file (i.e. I just downloaded the latest Macromedia Flashplayer) the download manager will save the file as .exe.doc. This is very annoying. This bug is also in the Mozilla 1.3 release candidate as well! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. go to http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash?application/x-shockwave-flash&P5_Language=English 2. download the flash player 3. check the downloaded file, it is a .exe.doc (you can also try to download the Mozila 1.3 release candidate, it happens there as well.) Actual Results: the file is being download but as .exe.doc Expected Results: just download as .exe maybe bugzilla is broken currently as well, I just get two bugs in total for all the download manager related bugs. So forgive me if there is already another bug like this
please try to delete the application/octet-stream entry in edit/preferences/helper apps

yes, that was the secret switch. .exe downloads are now working again. So what is it? Some bug, some misconfiguration are something from an old test build?
it's a mess... bz, please correct me if what I write here is wrong: That (wrong) entry was caused by an bug that has been fixed. That we append extensions to files instead of leaving them untouched is the result of a security fix. There's a bug to stop doing that. There are bugs on this exact issue. bug 164816 seems related. But I am not sure if this is a duplicate of it, I'll let bz do the duping :)
Yep, comment 3 is pretty much on the money. The two bugs you were seeing are creation of the entry and misuse of the entry. I'm marking this duplicate of the "creation" bug, since with that fixed the entry can't really be misused (since it won't get created). ;) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 189598 ***
