User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030329 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030329 This causes problems for situations when you have imported mail from Outlook, and you want to use the filters to show all messages that have attachments. Mozilla doesn't actually know which messages have attachments until they've been read/clicked. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make sure there are imported mails from Outlook that have attachments, and have not been clicked yet. 2. View messages that have attachments via the filter pulldown. Actual Results: Not all messages with attachments are shown Expected Results: Mozilla should've shown all messages that have attachments

Confirming. To reproduce: 1. create a Message View with the filter setting "Attachment Status is has Attachment". 2. Make sure you have "Automatically download new messages" in the Server Settings enabled. 3. Send yourself an email with an attachment. 4. Choose the View created in step 1 after the message was received. I think step 2 is essential. This bug can´t be fixed when you only download the message headers (see bug 79987). But if the entire message is downloaded, this should work.

I also turned "Download new messages automatically" on and after downloading not only the headers have been downloaded, but the entire emails! And it doesn't work. Even if this bug is minor, it's a really nasty one. Sometimes I would like to delete emails with big attachements (in my Inbox or Send mails - folders), but first I have to look for those emails by opening them!!!
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 I don't see a setting to turn on or off the Automatically Download New Messages setting, however, it seems to behave that way. I am using an IMAP server and any attachment that is downloaded automatically seems to become corrupt if there is ANY activity taken to the Inbox window during that automatic download. There seems to be no action that I can perform to re-download the attachment correctly. My work-around is to delete the INBOX and INBOX.msf files within the IMAPMAIL/{emailservername} folder, restart mozilla, and let it reacquire the messages and attachments. Somehow, the cached item seems to become corrupt.

The same problem exists in Thunderbird 0.5 for Windows. You first have to open an email before the paperclip icon appears and other filters are able to recognize it as a message with an attachment. I have tried the suggestions posted on this page and none of them does alleviate the problem. For example the "automatically download new messages" option does not resolve the problem at all.
What does it mean when a bug is assigned to someone who is "(gone)"?
Something has changed in Thunderbird about this. I'm using 0.5+ (20040312) and it seems to show the attachment icon for HTML mails as well. But it also seems to recognize attachments now before you open an email. Does anybody else see this? What changes have been made?
I am using Thunderbird version 0.6 (20040502) on an IMAP server (Courier-IMAP1.7.2 with maildir format mailboxes) over SSL, with the same problem -- the list of unopened mail doesn't show the attachment symbol for messages with attachments. None of the workarounds appear to have any effect (if they can even be applied to an IMAP server).
Needs fixing rather quickly as users need to know if dubious e-mails have attachments so they can make a more informed decision about opening them or not. I think the severity should be raised to major, as the bug has existed for quite a while now.
I agree — it's just plain dangerous. If I'm not mistaken, the goal of the Thunderbird project is to make a SAFER mail client, but this bug makes it impossible to know whether the mail you're opening has an attachment or not — which in my opinion, is extremely dangerous. I understand not having the feature if you've only downloaded the headers, but if you've downloaded the message body, it should be quite possible. If the text of a downloaded message contains the string "Content-Disposition: attachment;" it's got an attachment and should be flagged with a paperclip, plain and simple.

Please fix this? Not a bug? Someone is dropping the ball intentionally, aren't they?
This is clearly a bug that needs fixing. When a header is downloaded and states that there is an attachment then the clip shuold show. My users complain bitterly about this. The only thing they have to indicate attachments are the size. Thunderbird 0.7.3, cyrus imap. Julian
Still there in Thunderbird 0.8!!! And this is a *severe* issue especially for people who import mail from Outlook / Outlook Express etc.
Just checked the clients who are using courier-IMAP with v0.8 of Tbird on win2k. Still no paper clip until the message has been opened. Please raise the severity to major or higher, and perhaps re-assign to someone who is actually reading these bugmail reports... Also, is it reasonable to continue to call the bug "new" when it's passed its first anniversary? v0.8 is a real pleasure to use, otherwise.
A patch for this problem (Thunderbird only) has been checked in at bug 241203.
resolving as dup - 241203 fixes seamonkey as well. I need to fix seamonkey to clear the attachment flag when a msg just has a v-card, but I'll do that shortly. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 241203 ***

just downloaded and tested http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-trunk/ which translates as 0.6+ (20041025) The bug is still in evidence. Any idea guidance as to what I missed would be welcome.
I checked in the fix a few hours ago. Give the build system a chance to churn out the next nightly build...and it will only detect the attachments for newly downloaded messages...
just downloaded and tested Thunderbird version 0.6+ (20041026) from http://ftp28f.newaol.com/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-trunk/ sent a new message to a mailbox on a courier-imap server (with an attachment). Paperclip attachment symbol still did not show up until the message had been opened. This bug is not resolved.
version 0.6+ (20041027) Works for me. (cyrus imap) Great Stuff!. Thanks Julian
glad it's working for you, Julian. It works for me too...
still there in thunderbird 0.9 (20041103). Only posting here 'cause there are still so many votes for it, and by extension, enough people that might test it and confirm that this bug (or it's twin) is still crawling around. Also posting to bug 241203
Works for me. Courier IMAP.
