Instead of having mail copied to a folder always on or off, it would be very
useful to turn this on/off while composing a message. A checkbox in the toolbar
or address pane would be a good way to allow this feature.

Scott - that allows you to choose another folder. I can't seem to find any way
to tell it "I don't want to save this message" - effectively, /dev/null. I think
you may have misunderstood what the reporter was asking for.
(It's also something I'd like...)

Same here. Also see bug #247770. This functionality does not currently exist,
and I too would like to see it implemented. Thanks!

Surely the first step is to reopen this bug.

Agreed, but I am not authorized to do that. Do you have any suggestions?

You should try to get somebody that can reopen this bug on the mail-news or
Thunderbird newsgroup, or on the mozillazine Thunderbird forum.
It's obviously too late for branch but there is a lot of time to get something
done in the trunk for version 2.0

This is not a bug but a new feature request.

Thanks for reopening it, Frank. I know many former Mulberry users (myself
included), who whould find this feature useful in Thunderbird.

I don't want to be a nitpicker Frank but in Bugzilla all the documents are
called "bugs", even new feature requests.
The severity of this bug should be changed to "enhancement"?

Ok, marking as enhancement. I had given up hope but with renewed interest in
this feature perhaps this will get added. If it is unclear what I am asking for,
let me know. To reiterate, this a request for a per message option to disable
copy of an outgoing message to the Sent folder. Useful for not saving forwards
or messages with big attachments. Thanks!

It also does not indicate the current preference setting - for example "sent folder on x@y" (in addition to NOT allowing you to choose NOT to save a copy)

This bug looks like an interesting and valid idea for enhancement. My use case for this are mails where I just send big files to someone else, without any or much comment. I wouldn't want these to stuff up my sent mail folder.
However, I can't yet imagine how the UI for this should look, without adding too much bloat for folks who don't need this feature. So if we want this considered at some time in the future, first thing we need is mockup screenshots of possible UI for this. Make it as non-obtrusive as possible.

I have attached to mock-ups for how this could be done:
1. introduce a property on per-account basis, that when you enable fcc per default, you can add a property to also allow a per-message decision.
2. In the compose window, let the send button pop-down (as with the attachment button) to a second menu where you can also choose not to save.
3. (optionally have a separate menu entry in the file -> dialog of the compose window)
pros:
- the default message sent behaviour is still there.
- when switching accounts in the compose window, there will be no toolbar changes (if you had a separate button), but only the second option will hide / be disabled.

Given that this feature is well supported by an addon, and that addon has less than 5000 users, I don't really see the case for adding this to core functionality. Does anyone want to try and make that case?
