I think it has something to do with bug #90161. Dup? See attachment #147730 [details] in comment #2 of bug #242695, which is also a dup of #90161. Here the last character is displayed in a new line, too. I cannot confirm this bug on the examples postet parallel in de.comm.software.mozilla.mailnews on my own 1.8a-Linux-CVS-Mozilla build.

90161 is on last character not recignized in URLs, this one is on last character in non-URLs in new line -> no dupe.
