User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041026 Firefox/1.0RC1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041026 Firefox/1.0RC1 I think the "close tab" button can get some improvements, by making it look more like the "new tab" button which can be placed on the navigation bar. Now it can be confused with Windows's exit application button by some new users, especially because it's colour is dominant (red). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Why not put a small CLOSE button right on the individual tabs, like eMule does it? That way users won't be closing the wrong tab accidentally.
It makes it a lot harder to quickly close serveral tabs, though.
Why not have both, a seperate general close tab button and individual close tab buttons? It could be an option to disable one or the other. I also like the way emule does it and I installed the TabX extension to get it with mozilla. The only thing I do not like with TabX is the size of the X. It should not waste so much space. Again the emule solution shows the way how it should be done. Another possible solution would be using double clicks on tabs to close them. This is the same way how you close a window by d-clicking on the window menu icon. This way there is no additional space required and you do not need to hit a small target. If you think it could be confusing to novice users why then not make it an option?
Not just EMule, Eclipse also uses an individual X on each tab. Much more intuitive.
"Tab X Adds a Close button to each tab" Here is the link on "Mozdev": http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/clav/ I think this really basic function should be built into the browser core code for 2.0 Firefox. This is a more basic, more simple, and more requested feature than the drag and drop of tabs which was already put in before current 1.1 nightly builds.

In additon to Opera 6.x/7.x/8.x, "Tabbrowser extentions" and some other excellent extentions, Netscape 8.0.x can have "X" button on each tab. But still no "X" button on each tab when firefox...
Severity: minor → enhancement
Summary: a better 'close tab' button → a better 'close tab' button - "X" on each tab
Let alone the fact that the coding is mostly already done in the TabX extension and less than a few k in size. Just make it optional to turn on or off the code for the "X". Just put it in the same tab options as all the other "Tabs" functions. I'd like to see undo and duplicate added as well.
Please do not morph bugs to suit your own views, placing a close tab button on each tab is bug 108938 and not this one.
Summary: a better 'close tab' button - "X" on each tab → a better 'close tab' button
(In reply to comment #8) > placing a close tab button on each tab is bug 108938 and not this one. Sorry for misundestanding of this bug. Comment #0 is apparently for improvement of current "Close Tab button" as you say.

Not a blocker, but theme tweaks and improvements can and will continue to be made.

This bug should either block or be blocked by Bugzilla Bug 308396 depending on your point of view.
block bug 108938?, bug 265493, and Bug 318168 Improve tabbed browsing
Can this one block Bugzilla Bug 345741 Improve "All Tabs" menu active/visible tab feedback?
Given that there are now close buttons on each tab now in Firefox, is this bug still relevant?
In my opinion this bug is fixed and should be closed. In Fx3b4 it is much better.
I'd like to have the option to have the X on the far right like in "Seamonkey". The X on the right is much nicer when closing many tabs at once so you don't have to go hunting for the X. Just put in the code to choose either way or even both ways. Just put in checkboxes to [allow close button on each tab] and [show close button on right]

As far as I can tell, the values are 0 for close button only on active tab, 1 is close button on every tab, 2 is no close buttons and 3 is close button on far right of tab bar.

Thank you. Too bad this isn't documented anywhere other than here. What I'd really prefer is the X on both the tab and the right, but I don't think that is possible. Maybe an extension could do this some day.
We've since changed these icons - we'll likely change them again for Australis.
