It would be nice if a proxy is not found, the browser would fall back to direct
connection settings. In IE you can give it multiple options and it will fall
back on others. For instance, I have automatically detect and use automatic
configuration script checked. This allows me to use the web when connected to
my works VPN and when I'm not without having to change my connection settings.
This sounds rather trivial, but it's a pain if you switch between networks
frequently.

As far as I can tell there are no firefox dupes for this. Confirming and settind
dependency on browser equivalent.

I reported bug 274693 even though I had read this bug report. What I am
requesting in bug 274693 is not automatic fall-back, but rather proxy settings
etc. on a per-connection basis (VPN, direct, etc.). But my request is
admittedly similar to <A HREF="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?
id=43429">bug 43429</A>, a fact which I overlooked at the time of my submission.

Now that the core functions were moved into their own component, it's tempting
to dupe this one to bug 43429. Since the solution requires a mix of backend
(common) and front-end (Firefox specific) code, I'll leave this bug open and set
as depends.

sorry for bugspam, long-overdue mass reassign of ancient QA contact bugs,

Clarified summary.
This is not compatible with the current design, because if you are on a proxy-only network, going to direct will simply create a lot of problems.
RECOMMEND: wontfix.
Summary: Support multiple proxy settings (fallback configuration) → Support multiple proxy settings (fallback to DIRECT)

This is already taken care of by PAC, so this should probably be a wontfix.
