Press Alt-V or click on View. Use the down arrow to scroll through the options till you reach "Sort By". Press the down arrow, and the highlight disappears. Press the down arrow again, and "Threads" is highlighted. Same thing happens when scrolling up. With "Threads" highlighted, press the up arrow and the highlight disappears. Do you not have a 'Messages' submenu between 'Sort By' and 'Threads'? Extensions? Problem occurs in Safe Mode?

If I customize the toolbar to add the "Mail Views" field, then yes, there will be a "Messages" submenu. that's funny. It is selecting a hidden / collapsed menu item.

This symptom is noted at bug 332802 comment 3. I suggest duping this one over.

use hidden instead of collapsed so the hidden menu item won't steal focus when mousing over the menu items. hidden is the attribute we use when showing/hiding other menu items in the UI as well.
