User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20060404 Firefox/1.6a1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20060404 Firefox/1.6a1 View -> Messages menu-item only visible when View (Mail Views) Toolbar is visible/present Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Remove (if not already done) View (Mail Views) Toolbar item 2. Restart Thunderbird 3. Notice: No "View -> Messages" menu-item 4. Add View (Mail Views) Toolbar item 5. Restart Thunderbird 6. Notice: "View -> Messages" menu-item *is* visible/available Actual Results: "View -> Messages" menu-item is only available when the View (Mail Views) Toolbar item is displayed. Expected Results: "View -> Messages" menu-item should always be visible/available. Since the View (Mail Views) Toolbar item has been moved out of the Summary Pane, and the it would take up a lot of (often unavailable) space on the toolbar, the absence of the "View -> Messages" menu-item is painful.
My Build Identifier is, of course: Thunderbird version 3 alpha 1 (20060404) This should be fixed in Tb 2.0 since we can't claim that Tb can easily filter mail views if there is no UI for it in the default setup.

Well, I'll be darned. Reproduced with TB 2a1-0328, Win2K.

There are some assumptions in the message views code which don't hold in case the dropdown isn't there...
Blocks: mailviews
In the current builds the dropdown is not in the set of default toolbar items (due to removal of search toolbar). Hence the whole "message views" feature is not available. Is that considered an acceptable regression for TB 2.0?
comment #5 is right on. There are a lot of assumptions for message views that assume the drop down is still there. For comment #6, mail views can be added as a customizeable toolbar button. Just customize your toolbar. This turned out to be a very power feature that most users weren't understanding / leveraging so it's now a customizeable button.

(In reply to comment #3) > This means the focus is not visible for a moment as you arrow through. This symptom has been fixed at bug 350052.
If the View dropdown is now considered a power feature, how about simply removing the View|Messages menu entirely? If someone is expert enough to turn the feature on, then they probably don't need a (redundant) menu to get access to it. I never use the menu.
Personally, I would like to have access to the feature when I need it (which isn't that often) without having to have it in my toolbar constantly where it takes a lot of room.
That is also my motivation here. I'd like to use the "Unread" view for the spam folder, without changing the view constantly. Having a working View->Messages menu would help a lot on a 1024x768 screen. I can add one more button (e.g. "File", or "Tag"), and the "Views" combobox, before the search box is pushed into the overflow area.
I spent several hours trying to figure out how to filter my mail to display only specific tags. Personally, I think that in a folder with many messages, it's not much use tagging messages if they can't be filtered accordingly. Even if everyone doesn't agree on this, it's very hard to figure out that the /toolbar/ has to be customized to make this feature available. So for those who do wish to use this feature, (only power-users or otherwise) the View -> Messages menu should be made easily accessible.

I agree with Ramnath, Personally I used the View feature with a shared IMAP account. Allowing myself to see only emails which I have sent to this account. Additional information: Enabling "Views" in the menu system. specify custom views to be applied to selected folders across multiple IMap accounts. While the "View" pane is in the menu, views works as expected. Once the "View" pane is removed, all folder views revert to "All". I suspect this is related to comment 5
(In reply to comment #5) > There are some assumptions in the message views code which don't hold in case > the dropdown isn't there... In Thunderbird 2, I removed the line in mailWindowOverlay.js that hides the View - Messages menu. It all seems to work without having the Mail Views control on the toolbar. Should something break because of these "assumptions"? By the way, for anyone who just wants to work around the problem, put the Mail Views control on your toolbar, then hide it again with a userChrome.css file: #mailviews-container {visibility: collapse;}
All the talk about removing a line in mailWindowOverlay.js is fine if I can find the darn file and which line. The rest is all hand waving and means nothing to me. I am just a stupid user of Thunderbird that was upgraded to version 2 and now it doesn't work right. My fix would have been to go back to version 1.xxx where it works. But I will read and re-read until I at least have tried to fix version 2.
I and whereis cannot find mailWindowOverlay.js in the .tgz package I got 2.009 from. It appears the toolbar changes makes it impossible to use that fix. So my options are to wait for some specific fix to my version. The proper fix will be to make View -> Messages exist on my version 2.009.
Just customize the toolbar to include the "Mail Views toolbar" and it will show.

To Mangus Melin, how do you customize the toolbar? And how do you include the "Mail Views toolbar"? As I say I'm not an expert.
Right click the toolbar, choose Customiz... then drag the item to the toolbar and hit OK.
I think this bug should be closed. The use of View -> message was not what I needed. It was the message panel which got turned off as a mystery. When I use the simple change in window size my problem is solved and I really do not need Mail Views and the other stuff.

When I use > the simple change in window size my problem is solved and I really do not need > Mail Views and the other stuff. > So, even if you were in any position to make the request, why on earth would you want this bug closed if it wasn't about your problem, you didn't understand what it is about, there are people for whom it really is a matter of concern and you weren't even the originator? Whether this bug exists isn't actually a matter of opinion, yours or anyone else's. The bug is a recognised known error but just because your completely different problem is solved, you ask for the bug to be closed? This is a bug management system, (if you understand what that means), not a user support forum.
The View Messages menu is available in TB 2.0.0.17 on my Mac, but not on Windows. I have never added or removed the Mail Views toolbar item on the Mac. And I use it frequently on my Mac. It is working fine without the Mail Views toolbar item on the toolbar.

since view was removed from toolbar by default, not seeing Messages in View menu is regressive behavior

Benjamin, does this still reproduce?

From what I understand of the issue it seems to be fixed in the latest versions both 60.8 and 68b5. The messages menu stays visible regardless to the toolbars status.

I reread the ticket a few times, and I see where I got confused. View--> Messages not just the Message menu item.

However, as an amendment the messages option under view isn't shown regardless to whether or not the mail toolbar is visible. That is to say that it does appear in the hamburger menu on the right, but not in the topbar under view.

It surprises me that there would be a difference in those two areas at all. Do we not build the menu lists from the same location?

Not the toolbar itself, the presence of the Mail Views widget that you can add there.

They are completely different.

Still experiencing this problem.

There is no entry under the View menu for "Messages" if you don't have the "Mail Views" item dragged onto a toolbar.

This is on TB 68.12.1, which I'm required to use due to critical addons that are not available in newer versions.
