User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird version 2 beta 2 (20070116)
The "Delete From POP Server" feature of Message Filters does not work! I just downloaded Version 2 beta 2, and it still doesn't work. It also didn't work with version 1.5.0.9. I know the Filter was working because I added an extra action of Tagging (Labelling) the Message as Important. TBird downloaded the Message and labelled it as Important -- when it should have deleted it and not downloaded.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry Mester
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a Message Filter using the Delete from POP Server option.
2. Download a Message that should be deleted by the Filter.
3. You can specify E-Mails from your own Account, and send the test E-Mails to your own Account. This way, you won't be testing the Filter with good E-Mails from other people.
Actual Results:
The E-Mails were not deleted from the POP Server, but they were tagged as Important which confirms that the Message Filter was working.
Expected Results:
It should have deleted the Message from my Server without downloading it. It therefore would not have had to label it as Important.

are you suggesting that we didn't delete it from the pop server because we downloaded it? Delete from pop3 server does not mean "don't download". It means remove from the pop3 server, but still download it...

Thanks for correcting my misunderstanding. The "Delete" feature does the trick. I'm not sure why the "Delete from POP Server" feature exists since the POP Server automatically deletes Messages after they're downloaded. I would suggest renaming the "Delete from POP Sever" to "Fetch then Delete from POP Server" which would avoid this confusion. I would also suggest providing some Help info about Thunderbird features with the installed Thunderbird programme instead of only downloading Help from the Mozilla Website.

If you choose leave messages on server, then we leave the messages on the server and the delete action is useful. But yes, I understand that it's confusing adn that built-in help would be very useful.

->INVALID (since this was just a misunderstanding). Including Help with the distribution is bug 253334.

I had forgotten all about the "Server Settings" in the Account Settings Menu. Now I've figured out how things work. I didn't realize that it is Thunderbird (or Outlook Express) that must 'delete' your Messages from the POP Server -- I thought that the Server automatically deleted them after you download the Message. I've now solved my problem by 'unchecking' the Automatic Download option in Server Settings, and then using "Fetch from POP Server" in all the Message Filters. What I'm trying to do is avoid downloading Spam from my POP Server Account, and instead forward it to my Yahoo Account. I only have regular Dialup, and I don't like downloading Spam over 50K -- I've received Spam over 1MB! I also don't want to delete any Message without knowing what it is. By forwarding suspected Spam to my Yahoo Account, I don't take the risk of deleting any good E-Mail. I would suggest adding a small Tutorial to the Help Menu just to explain to people how they can use Message Filters to avoid downloading Spam, and / or sending it to another Account such as Yahoo or Hotmail. They need to understand that the Message Filters are SUBJECT TO the Server Settings, and they therefore must set their Server Settings to accommodate their Message Filters. I'm glad to now know exactly how it works.
NOTE!: I suffered another problem. TBird erased all of my Message Filters! It said it saved a backup copy. Where can I find this backup copy?

Probably somewhere in your profile folder: <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder>
As for the other stuff, I don't really understand what you want to do, but you can't (using tb) forward a mail if it's not downloaded first.

Invalid? No, it isn't. With a global setting of leaving the messages on the server, you may still want to add a message filter to exceptionally delete some unwanted messages from the POP server. Now that filter really does not work.
Try this:
1. In Account Settings check Leave messages on Server.
2. Create a message filter like this: if Subject contains "*****SPAM*****" then Delete From POP Server.
3. Send a message to yourself with Subject "*****SPAM*****"
4. Download messages from POP server.
5. ssh to pop server and you will see that the message with Subject "*****SPAM*****" is not deleted.

You are right that this "Delete from POP Server" feature does not actually delete a Message from the Server without downloading the Message first. David Bienvenu says that this is how it is supposed to work.
In a suggested improvement to TBird (Check Bug 387515), I suggest having Message Filters be applied to the "Fetch Headers Only" feature in Server Settings. At present, Message Filters are not applied to Fetch Headers Only. This way you could automatically download Messages after first only downloading the Headers (including necessary data). You could then not download unknown E-Mails, but subsequently manually download them if you would wish to do so. I don't know if they're going to make this change to TBird. I have Version 2.0.0.6 (20070728), and the Message Filters still don't work for "Fetch Headers Only" feature.

In recent versions like 2.0.0.6, a message filter NEVER deletes a message from the POP server: neither before downloading the message, nor after it. In earlier versions like 1.5, it first downloaded the message and then deleted it from the server but now it both downloads it and leaves it on the server.

You are absolutely right! ThunderBird is not always deleting downloaded Messages from the POP Server. If you log onto your Internet Server directly through their Website, you will be able to see a bunch of Messages in your Account that TBird previously downloaded but didn't delete from the POP Server. This is a very serious malfunction.
Additionally, in Version 2.0.0.6 (20070728) the "Fetch Headers only" option in "Server Settings" is NOT WORKING. This is a major malfunction! TBird does not download the Message Header when you check "Fetch Headers only", and TBird does not delete the Message from the POP Server. This needs to be urgently repaired.

this works for me, unless I have a later filter that moves the message out of the inbox. Terry, do you have a filter like that? I was having trouble with this, until I added a "stop filter execution" action to my pop3 delete from server filter. The stop filter action is only available on the trunk, though.

actually, turning off message quarantining fixed this for me (tools | options | privacy | viruses) - do you have that set, Terry?

Yes, I did have virus quarantining checked on. "Fetch Headers only" now works for me with it left off. A Warning of the potential consequences of this quarantining feature should be added to that page.
I notice that the Message Filters are indeed applied to downloaded Headers. Unfortunately, as soon as a Message Filter is applied to a Header, the full Message is automatically downloaded for that Header without the "Fetch from POP Server" selected. This download occurs even if the Message Filter only states to "Delete from POP Server". This is a problem with respect to not downloading Junk Messages. The full Message for a Header should only be downloaded if "Fetch from POP Server" is selected in the Filter.
If you choose to "Leave messages on server / Until I delete them" in Server Settings, how do you subsequently delete such Messages with TBird? The downloaded Header only allows you to manually download the Message -- there's no option to delete the Message from the POP Server. It has to be done via your Internet Server Website. How would this be done via TBird?

"Delete from POP Server" is definitely working properly with the "Fetch Headers only" feature. I chose to "Leave Messages on Server / until I delete them" in Account Settings. When a Header has a Message Filter applied to it which acts to Delete from POP Server, the Message is downloaded and indeed deleted from the POP Server. (I concurrently logged onto my Internet Server mail service to verify this.) If no Message Filter requesting a Delete is applied to the Header, then the Message is left on the POP Server.
However, when manually downloading the Message via the Header, the Message DOES NOT get deleted from the POP Server after being downloaded. This is a definite problem. This means that you need to log onto your Internet Server to delete these Messages. Most people wouldn't know how to do this.
Can anyone verify if the "Delete" option in Message Filters will delete the Message from the POP Server without downloading it first (when using the "Fetch Headers only" option)? It appears to me that by choosing "Delete", the Header and Message on the POP Server are deleted without the Message being downloaded first. I'm not completely certain if this is happening. Would anyone know for sure?

ADDENDUM: You need to first choose "Delete" in the Message Filter, then "Delete from POP Server". If you don't choose "Delete from POP Server", the Message will not get deleted from the POP Server.

It fixes it for me, too, but it is a bit scary, isn't it?

the message quaranting is only useful if you have one of those scary anti-virus programs that delete your whole inbox when they see a virus in a message. In other words, it's trying to protect you from the anti-virus programs, not the viruses.

I'm using Thunderbird 17.0.7. The "Delete from POP Server" option is present in the Message Filters here. Still, messages meeting the filter criteria for Delete from POP Server are not being deleted. These messages are still arriving at my Inbox and being fetched and downloaded at each automatic check for new messages. Of course, it's possible that SOME of these messages ARE deleted from the POP server and I never see them. In Options > Antivirus, I have "Allow antivirus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages" checked. I haven't yet tried it with this option disabled. I'm not sure I can agree with the contention of Comment 18. The antivirus option clearly states that it "Allow antivirus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages," it does not say it is intended to protect you from the actions of the antivirus.
This bug is also discussed in Bug 315791.

The newest Version of TB is 23.0, and you need to update to that. The 'Delete from POP Server' is definitely working properly. Also check Bug 585243 which I had posted. When you click 'Get Mail', the Messages set to be deleted from a manual Filter run will be deleted. For automatic Filter, you need to both 'Delete' and 'Delete from POP Server'.

Followed the instructions in Comment 20, tried numerous times over several months, reordered filters to test, still can't get it to work. TB 24.0.
