Details
I've been running into many cases of livemarks having the regular folder icon instead of the proper icon. I've seen inconsistent behavior when adding livemarks. Between the bookmarks toolbar, menu and sidebar it seems at least one shows the wrong icon when a livemark is added. Having the bookmark sidebar open seems to show it the most. Restarting the browser can fix them to show the right icon.
But starting with the 20071011 nightly all of my existing livemarks have regular folder icons. Restarting doesn't fix that. Going back to earlier builds shows the right icon.
1. Open the bookmark sidebar.
2. Add a livemark that is visible on the bookmark toolbar and the sidebar.
3. See if any of the new livemark has the correct icon in the three bookmark locations.
I tried a new profile to see if it had anything to do with a problematic places file but that still had the problem.

The closest bug I found was bug 257054 but that's a really old bug.

While the RSS Icons may have been/or are - intermittant, they are now completely gone in the Bookmarks sidebar, but show in the Bookmark drop-list & Organizer, so I think something regressed or got broken with perhaps the checkin of the Places Folder. I'm guilty of not having time at the moment to search for a regress window.
That being said, I'm not so sure this is a DUPEME

So this exists at least back to M8. And I also recall seeing it filed, but am having no luck finding the dupe.
Basically, if the UI (Bookmarks Toolbar and/or Bookmarks Sidebar) is showing when the feed is added, then the icon is a folder. If they aren't open, when you do open it, the icon is the proper feed icon. Close then open the sidebar will make the icon correct. Two ways I've discovered to correct the Bookmarks Toolbar folder icon is to Customize and remove the folder then put it back. Or simply restart the browser. Hiding the toolbar momentarily has no effect.
This should block final for sure and probably block beta.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
