User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506) Build Identifier: Version 2.0.0.12 (20080213) At first this happenned sporadically and it happened last night and again this morning. It always seemes to be the same scenario. I am reading newly downloaded messages (I leave thunderbird rnning all the time to get messages from my POP3 server) and often will select several to delete. This mornig however I was reading one and whwn I deleted it with <SHIFT><DELETE> all the meeages in my inbox disappeared. The number of new messages showing next to the inbox remained at 93 which was the number that was there before the error occurred but nothing in the inbox. I tried going to other folders and they were fine but when going back to the inbox it was empty. When I finally exited the program the inbox unread count went blank as if the indexes were fixed. This same scenario has now happened about 6 or 7 times. I am very good about filing things and keeping the inbox clean but this is getting serious. Does anyone know of any way to recover these messages?? Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.Read a new mail 2.Delete the current message 3.All messages in the inbox disappear. I have been watching specifically to be sure only the message I wished to delete was highlited but all were still gone Actual Results: All messages are gone Expected Results: Only the highlited message should be gone
Any extension that could be causing it?
I have now experienced this exact scenario twice in 2 different email accounts/profiles since I upgraded to Thunderbird v2.0.0.19 about 2 weeks ago. In all 4 cases, this is what occurred: 1. Launched Thunderbird & downloaded new emails. 2. Deleted one of the newly-received emails in the Inbox. 3. All emails in my Inbox disappeared (both pre-existing emails & newly-downloaded emails). 4. The number of new emails still displayed "4", even though no emails were visible. In all 4 cases, I have been unable to restore the lost emails. I'd never experienced this bug prior to installing v2.0.0.19, but that could be a coincidence. Re-indexing the Inbox folder made no noticable difference. The only extension I have installed in Thunderbird is TalkBalk. I'm using the default Theme. This is a critical error for me & I won't be able to continue using Thunderbird unless someone can provide a fix...or at least a trick to recovering the lost emails.
Tom, do you still see this problem? Lorriev and Tom what results do you get after using http://kb.mozillazine.org/Disappearing_mail ? xref Bug 471137 - Incomming message disappear

This still very occasioanally happens. The last time was last week and the difference this time was that I was able to get the contacts back by rebuilding the index. That had not worked before. The PC I use it on has been changed and is a new laptop with Vista Business and I am on the latest release version version 2.0.0.19 (20081209). Please let me know if you need any more info. (In reply to comment #3) > Lorriev and Tom what results do you get after using > http://kb.mozillazine.org/Disappearing_mail ? > > xref Bug 471137 - Incomming message disappear I worked through all the suggestions listed in the "Disappearing Mail" article when this behavior began for me in January 2009. I also tried re-installing Thunderbird from scratch. However, emails in my inbox continued to permanently disappear every few weeks. Since constantly losing emails was unacceptable and Thunderbird didn't appear to be stabilizing, I had no choice but to switch email programs. Reluctantly, I stopped using Thunderbird in February 2009.
>3. All emails in my Inbox disappeared (both pre-existing emails & >newly-downloaded emails). Probably classic antivirus effect. Reporter (and hothers) have you check "Allow antivirus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages"?

I have since upgraded again and have not experienced the problem since. I am currently running .22 and no further example of it. I read the comment about virus scanner quarantining the mail but although that is the setting, I am still using Avast, no changes to configuration have been made. Tom

Regarding antivirus quarantining, I temporarily disabled my antivirus program entirely...and still had emails disappear. I also tried 3 different antivirus programs (Norton, Avira, AVG) in a desperate attempt to discover the cause of the Thunderbird problem. No improvement, so eventually had to abandon Thunderbird as too unstable. I miss it...but can't take the risk of more lost emails.
