This is a tracking bug for bugs that are related to: -looking at a bookmark and determining what folder it is in -thinking about a folder (or tag) and finding a specific bookmark Going from bookmark to parent folder: -Display the folder of bookmarks when searching in the Library in two different ways: --In the prefpane. This would be similar to the Folder drop down in the star contextual dialog box, which is the same underlying code base as the properties pane in the Library (bug 469416) --In a column (bug 469421) Going from parent folder to specific bookmark: -Allow the user to search for folder names in the Library window (bug 406157) -Allow the user to find bookmarks based on folder names in the awesome bar, in a similar manner to how we currently search tags (bug 469425) -Allow the user to navigate on tags and folder names in the awesome bar (bug 469424)
Summary: [meta] Bugs related to bookmark and the things that group them (folders, tags) → [meta] Bugs related to bookmarks and the things that group them (folders, tags)
Quick note: if other people want to group bugs in with these, please make sure they are UI based and feature level bugs (since the description of this meta bug is a bit vague).
One more: bug 469441, Add "Open Enclosing Folder" to search results of bookmarks in the Library window

What about to add to this meta bug the ability to search folders description? There are bugs about searching bookmarks description in the location bar: - bug 393574 - bug 406246 and in the sidebar and the organizer search: - bug 393584
(In reply to comment #3) > and in the sidebar and the organizer search: > > - bug 393584 I forgot the bug 265048
I'd like to add two bugs to this collection: > -looking at a bookmark and determining what folder it is in An excellent way of getting oriented quickly after finding a bookmark was the way search used to work in Netscape 4, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171575#c63 > -thinking about a folder (or tag) and finding a specific bookmark Again, it is very helpful to get an overview in a large collection of bookmarks if you can use separators effectively, and they are vastly more effective if then can be --labelled---------- like this. This fine feature was a kind of standard at least in Netscape, Firefox 2 and Seamonkey. Firefox 3 deprived us of this benefit and all complaints about it have been obnoxiously ignored by now, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=404983#c9
see also bug 56418 (mainly find/search with locate folder)
A discussion in the developer newsgroup has been started as it enables a meta-discussion, is near the "realizators" and everyone will be able to participate (not only people on CC on one of the bugs). How to access the news post? From comment #77 of bug 171575: Add Account for news-server (news.mozilla.com), "subscribe" to the newsgroup mozilla.dev.apps.firefox) and search thread Date 16 Feb 2009 18:26:39, subject "Discussion about several Bookmark/Places improvements required? Inspired by bug 469426". Cheers, Georg

There are dozens and dozens of bugs about this problem, many marked as duplicates and many not and they have been reported for many years in many different ways yet this is still is a problem in Firefox 4. People create dozens if not hundreds of bug entries all about the same problem but because there proposed solution varies its treated as a new bug, tons of duplicate bug threads all mostly being ignored. Years later people have had to turn to a plug in to fix the bug since no one is fixing it in the product. Almost 40,000 people have downloaded Show Parent Folder 1.8 by White Alice0775 to fix this since Mozilla doesn't appear to be going to ever address this. I'm no programmer or coder but it seems like this is such an EASY thing to fix with a few tiny lines of code and it makes no sense that many years later from the original dozens of bug reports about the problem nothing has been done.
This is an artifact of prioritization, as opposed to intentionally ignoring the problem. We're still very interested in solving these problems, just haven't had a chance yet given the higher level things that he had to get right first.
Should we take the previous comment as a sign of hope or do we need to resolve to despair? Please take a look at: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=404983#c26 I am stuck with using Firefox 2 (sic!) because I need labelled separators and have no time to redesign my bookmarks list of several thousand entries. Given that this would certainly be a very easy fix, interest in solving such basic problems is at least not obvious. Also considering the significant problems of browsing bookmarks search results and relating them to the bookmarks folder structure, there is simply no apparent support or care for good bookmarks management as needed by bookmarks power users. Please have mercy with us and care about the most painful issues!

This meta isn't really actively being used for tracking things at the moment. The bugs themselves are all tracked individually. Closing out. You'll still get notifications for bugs that are changed that block this.
