An empty quick search box shows a grayed out "Subject or From". Sometimes, after
using the quick search feature, it shows "Subject or From" as a text, not grayed out. This filters the message list for "Subject or From".

Bernie what version where you using ?
Raoul do you still have the issue ? if so do you have themes/extension installed ?
I cannot reproduce the problem in Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 nor 3.0b2, Windows XP.

* ThreadKey 0.5
* ViewAbout 1.4
i have the following plugins installed:

* Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla 1.0.0.1
* Google Update 1.2.145.5

* Silverlight Plugin 2.0.40115.0
* VLC Multimedia Plug-in 0.9.9.0
* Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.0
i can still repreoduce it the following way:
1. open shredder
2. open another application (e.g. calc, firefox, whatever)
3. switch to thunderbird, make sure that you see a "greyed-out" "Subject or From"
4. place the cursor into the quickserach input field. i am using ctrl+k for this
5. press alt+tab to switch the window
6. switch back to thunderbird using alt+tab
7. the quicksearch input field now has a "not greyed out" content: "Subject or
From"
as far as i can see, the error occours as soon as thunderbird looses the focus and the curser is not active anymore.
moreover, this issue only occurs when you use "alt+tab". not, when you are clicking in the taskbar!
please reopen this bug!

Can you run shredder in safe mode (see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode) and reproduce. If you can't in safe mode than the issue comes from one of the extensions you use - please report the bug to the author of said extension.

This may be fixed by the patch on bug 474701. The quick-search widget code had and continues to have various issues, but I may have fixed this one. It really should be using the toolkit support for this mechanism instead of doing it itself.

bah, asuth midairs me :)
I can't speak to this specific issue, and can't say I've seen it.
But perhaps more disconcerting in current nightly, I see that the hint text doesn't reappear if you blank out the field. not going to fire up the tryserver build, so I can't confirm asuth about bug 474701. But I agree with the rest of comment 10

I don't know what Shredder is, but other than that I can follow the steps exactly and cannot reproduce the problem.

when will this be pushed to a nightly build?

shredder is the nightly thunderbird build.
as a side note, i have a old version of thunderbird installed on the system,
which i do not use anymore.

since a build introduced on june 13th/14th, the issue slightly changed.
the first thing i noticed is, that the default quicksearch setting is now "Subject" and *not* "Subject or From" as in previous builds.
second, pressing "ctrl+k" to access the quicksearch does not lead to the
described problem. i still manage to reproduce it though:
1. open shredder
2. open another application (e.g. calc, firefox, whatever)
3. switch to thunderbird, make sure that you see a "greyed-out" "Subject"
4. place the cursor into the quickserach input field by clicking into the
quicksearch box. *it is important to click and not use any shortcut like ctrl+k*
5. press alt+tab to switch the window
6. switch back to thunderbird using alt+tab
7. the quicksearch input field now has a "not greyed out" content: "Subject"
third, if you remove the quicksearch content, the greyed-out hint on what you're
searching in/for does not come back.

this problem still exists on windows vista business with build:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2pre) Gecko/20090724 Shredder/3.0b4pre ID:20090724050314
1. open shredder
2. open another application (e.g. calc, firefox, whatever)
3. switch to shredder, make sure that you see a "greyed-out" "Subject"
4. place the cursor into the quick search input field by clicking into the
quick search box *or* use ctrl+k to access the quick search field
5. press alt+tab to switch the window
6. switch back to shredder using alt+tab
7. the quick search input field now has a *not greyed out*, selected content: "Subject or From"
note: this does not happen when you use the mouse for switching windows. this only happens when you use "alt+tab".

I see a similar problem in Thunberbird 3.0b4.
After restart, quick search box shows "Subject or From filter" although "Subject, To or CC filter" is select
Steps to reproduce:
- Select "Subject, To or CC filter" in quick search drop down.
- Restart TB (close and open again).
Actual Results:
Quick search box shows "Subject or From filter"

It is similar as is has to do with "Subject or From filter" but it has nothing to do whether quick search box is greyed out or not.
Should I file a separate bug about it?
Comment 22•15 years ago
|
||
Yes, non-persistent filters would be a different problem for a new bug.
However, Daniel, can you try latest branch build before filing? I haven't come across this problem so far (no explicit tests done yet).

Thomas,
tried with nightly build and it's still there.
-> Filed bug #525948
By the way, I think this bug should be renamed to reflect the fact that it is about text in the Quick Search widget being grayed out vs. not grayed out.
