STR: 1. File/Save As 2. Change the save as format 3. Notice that the extension remains .eml 4. Save it as a different format The file is saved as subject.eml regardless of the format you choose. In my tests, it appears that - The XP filepicker doesn't want its default filename to have an extension. - The GNOME filepicker *does* want its default filename to have an extension, since it doesn't append extensions at all. - Vista/Win7 are happy either way. - Dunno what Mac does. (To test this, I changed the second argument in <http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/base/content/mailCommands.js#367> to ""). Bryan: thoughts about what we could do here? Making that line OS-dependent would work, but is really a hack.

That comment's a bit outdated -- we're looking at partially backing out bug 340168 in bug 508597.

We've worked around this in bug 509379.
I'm going to mark this fixed, since we've used the same workaround as on Mac. The bugs to follow up on are bug 514494 and bug 514497.
