Firefox loads and operates just fine. Thunderbird installs when dragged to the Application Folder. When invoked, the Thunderbird icon bounces several times, and then gives a CRASH error about a page long. I have never been able to get it to load and run on Mac. I would love to be able to move my email from PC to Mac but this is not possible since Thunderbird crashes every time it tries to load up. When are you going to fix this and when is an update going to be released? the offset means you don't have symbols. you need to either use crash-reporter or download a shark build and then try the system reporter.

Dunno what that is, but what I gave you was the entirety of the error message. Is someone willing to walk me thru keystroke steps of how to get a "stack trace" for you? Because it's a bummer that Firefox has no problems, current version on a current Mac, and yet Thunderbird crashes each time it is invoked. - MR

So I download the file under it (mac.dmg) and moved it into applications. Seems it is named SHREDDER. When I invoke it, NOTHING happens. The SHREDDER icon bounces in the bottom and nothing pops up.

Tried again. Crash Reporter came up saying: We're sorry The application had problem and crashed. Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to submit a report for this crash. Details: The application didn't leave an application data file.

This isn't an easy problem ... in large part because we can't reproduce it. Jonathan: On the evidence of comment #16, this crash may be happening in (or under) CGFontGetGlyphsForUnichars. If so, do you have any idea what might be going on? Of course, the stack from comment #16 might also be corrupt, and therefore useless.

Why would/could it be corrupt? I am glad you are all trying to find an answer.

(For example, your logs from comment #15 show even Apple's crashreporter failing.) By the way, Thunderbird 3.0.2 has now been released. Try downloading and running that version. But before you install it, do the following to verify your download. (I'll assume you download "Thunderbird 3.0.2.dmg" to your Downloads directory.) Run Applications : Utilities : Terminal, and at the prompt enter: hdiutil verify "Downloads/Thunderbird 3.0.2.dmg" This will tell you whether or not your download is corrupt (which might have happened if the download didn't finish properly). If even this doesn't clear up your crashes, try running Thunderbird on some other Mac (if you can get access to one).

On second thought, it seems pretty clear the crash under CGFontGetGlyphsForUnichars is in Apple's crashreporter itself (as also indicated in the log entries from comment #15). That doesn't sound good. Maybe clearing and rebuilding all system caches (especially the font-related ones) would be worth a try, as 10.6 is known to be susceptible to font cache problems. Could try downloading and running FontNuke [Google for it] to see if that helps.

Hey I am a longtime PC guy who just got a MAC for Xmas. Just downloaded Thunderbird, moved to Applications as the screen shows, and invoke it from the APPS Folder. Thats all I am doing. No special tricks. I downloaded Firefox the same way and have zero problems with Firefox, so there must be some bug in Thunderbird to not install and run normally. I will try loaded new 3.02 today.

I do not know how to "clear and rebuild caches" on Mac, but I can tell you that version 3.03 still does not work after it installs into the applications. I do not want to nuke any fonts. The only fonts on there came with the OS. Mark

Followed the steps in the article. Re-downloaded Thunderbird 3.03 again. Installed. Ran it and once again it gives same error message as above.

Can't, my friend, Thunderbird never ever shows up in the screen header and within 3-5 seconds, the crash error pops up. I am about ready to hang this up. No other program does this. All other email programs work fine, all browsers work fine, all software installs and works fine on here. Except Thunderbird. Nothing wrong with this machine. Something is being overlooked by the team at Mozilla with Thunderbird. I have reported error messages, gone thru tests all above, the Thunderbird NEVER loads (even v3.03) it simply crashes when invoked. This is rotten because all I wanted to do was sync up my email between my PC and my Mac. Mac runs several email programs without a hitch. But the one I use wont even load. I used Thunderbird since it was named EUDORA and wish someone would make this work for a new, virgin MAC.

I have the same or similar problem on MacOSX 10.6.3. I downloaded Thunderbird 3.0.3 yesterday and installed but when trying to launch the app from the application folder it crashes immediately - just a bounce in the dock and over. I tried the english and the german version of 3.0.3, the older version 2.0.0.24 and Lanikai 3.1 Beta 1 and always get exactly the same behaviour. I'm sure they do as far as I read the various discussions in bugzilla. It seems to be a quite difficult problem. So try to be patient. I am still using my old Eudora now but it is getting in retirement-mode (= getting buggy).

Mark, could you try two things, please: (1) Select the Thunderbird.app icon in the Finder and press Cmd-I (Get Info). In the Thunderbird Info panel that appears (NOTE that this is within the Finder; it does NOT require you to actually run Thunderbird), is the checkbox "Open using Rosetta" checked? If so, please uncheck it, close the Info panel, and see if this makes any difference when you try to start Thunderbird. (2) The messages in comment #15 indicate some kind of font-related problem on your system. This may or may not be relevant to the problem Thunderbird is having, but you should try to resolve it anyway. I suggest downloading and running FontNuke (http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/) to clear all the font-related caches, as OS X is known to sometimes have problems in this area. NOTE that this will not "nuke" any actual fonts. It merely clears various cache files so that they will then be automatically rebuilt; this often resolves inconsistencies that can cause a variety of application problems.

I thank you, but these same steps were followed earlier from another message and after doing these steps I did not experience any change in things.

NO Changes, people. THUNDERBIRD does NOT work with a new Macbook. You guys have received all manner of codes and blamed it on fonts, stacktrace and more. Still no fix. Try this. Go to a store where MAC is sold. Install Thunderbird on ANY MACS there. It DOES NOT WORK.

Mark, we can understand frustration. but please know that the comments so far have been based on sound technical experienced, based on the information available. If everyone who bought a new Mac experienced this problem, we wouldn't be lacking examples and problem reports, and might have a better understanding of this issue. Clearly, that is not the case. Thanks Wayne. Thing in, while I have been dealing with PCs since the 80s, this is my first MAC and first experience with MAC. I have given all the reports as instructed, and nobody can seem to duplicate the issue. This Macbook runs the Microsoft Exchange as well as a Mac MAIL program just fine. When I try to install and run any version of Thunderbird, up pops the SHREDDER application and then I get the CRASH error which I reported in detail months back. Yes I reported it more than once. No, nobody has been able to tell my why they are able to run Thunderbird on a NEW MACBOOK. Guess I will have to settle for the MAIL program that comes with MAC, because it can import my Thunderbird folders from my PC Thunderbird (via USB drive). Just telling you, Thunderbird will not load without crashing. I would not call that a resolve.

Mark, sobe, if you are interested in retesting, please create and use a new profile http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Using+Multiple+Profiles but Don't delete the old profile. and version 3.3a3 due out in a week or two at http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/ and please report results.

With the newest version release, suddenly Thunderbird DOES load without crashing on MAC. Congrats, you solved it...
