For writing emails it is very useful to have a spellchecker. Currently you need to install an Add-On for this. But OS X offers a system integrated spellchecker. To use this into Thunderbird you only need to revert bug 422760. I do so for my own builds now over a year and it works nice (since 10.6 also with different languages in one mail). Because I like the benefits of having a spellchecker without installing an Add-On, I would like a checkbox in the preferences to switch between osxspell and hunspell.
A checkbox would have two advantages:
1. You would have a spellchecker out of the box (on OS X)
2. You can switch between your (special) installed spellchecker and the system spellchecker.
The system spellchecker offers additional features, like grammar checking and substitutions but this doesn't work at the moment. But it still handles different languages in one mail (multiple-language spell checker in 10.6).
I've made a patch to include this checkbox (the box, not the whole feature), so you can see what it could look like.
This is an example to show how osxspell can handle multiple languages under 10.6 in Thunderbird.

Last time I checked you didn't need to install an addon to have spellchecking... what do you mean?
Component: Preferences → Message Compose Window
QA Contact: preferences → message-compose

Yes, thats correct for en-US, for all other languages you need an additional Add-On. And this would be redundant with osxspell.
Sadly osxspell was removed in Bug 469499 from core, but it would be nice if we can put osxspell with support for all features (autocorrection, suggestions) directly into Thunderbird.
Summary: Add a checkbox to switch between osxspell and hunspell in Thunderbird → Include osxspell with autocorrection and suggestions into Thunderbird

Not a strategic direction to do this deep an integration. But perhaps something for an add-on developer?
