Finding a mime type in the Helper App listing with NS 4.x is a major pain. There are a lot of them, and there seems to be no particular sort order. Currently, Mozilla has the same problem once enough mime types are defined. The mime types seem to be sorted by order in which they were added. This is not conducive to quickly finding a mime type. Since mime types are inherently hierarchical and since the list of mime types is already a tree, I propose making that tree hierarchical. For example, there would be an audio branch that would contain all the audio/whatever types. Having the types sorted alphabetically within each branch and having the branches also sorted alphabetically would immensely improve the usability of the dialog.

If this bug was left open for implementing hierarchical display after the first checkin, isn't it now the same as bug 46793?

It's been the same as that bug all along; I just never found it. ;) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 46793 ***
