The Emscripten project needs a logo. This will be used on the Research site as well as the home page for Emscripten.
Some high points about Emscripten that may help for the logo:
- it generates shockingly high-performance JS
- it makes it possible to port native desktop applications to the web
- it's enabling all sorts of existing software to become web software
- we're specifically targeting porting games
- the name is a play on the Simpsons ("embiggen") -- it means to turn something into JavaScript, i.e., to em-script-en it
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave. Could you share a bit more about where and how this logo would be used?
I ask b/c we generally try to avoid creating logos for every initiative the various teams around Mozilla do...that would get pretty time-consuming and potentially create a glut of confusing branding floating around.
So, I'd like to get a better sense of what you need so we can evaluate whether a logo is the right solution for you.
Thanks!

Emscripten is a high priority for this year -- it's an answer to Native Client, it's supporting the Games initiative, and it's driving forward the speed of the web platform. It's already high visiblity (just Google it) but doesn't have a home beyond Alon's GitHub repo. I can create a quick static single-page site for it myself, but a logo would be helpful.

Hi Dave, please meet Matt.. one of our awesome freelancers. I'm going to assign this bug to him so he can help design a great logo for us, under Sean's guidance.

Hi guys, thanks for having me on to work out some ideas for this. Sorry for the delayed response...not sure what the current status is on this...but I've had some time recently to work out a couple of concepts that I thought I would share.
The idea of concept 1a, is to use the 'e' in a more lighthearted fun manner, since I thought the name emscripten is quirky, so why not play that up a bit. The 'e' is portrayed showing movement to symbolize something being emscripted.
Concept 1b is a bit of a take off of the first, but portraying the 'e' as an emscripten button, the idea is to press the enscripten button to enscript something.
If you feel this concept is worth pursuing then another idea could be a graphic that looks similar to a switch...I'm thinking like a Dr Frankenstein switch.
These are just a couple of ideas to get the ball rolling, please let me know your thoughts!
Cheers,
Matt

Very nice! I like the button/switch concept too.
A concern though is that recently dherman suggested that we rename the project. I'm don't think we had a final decision about that, but I guess that could affect logo design. Dave?

Alon: Thanks for the reminder. I'm not going to be too aggressive about a name change, but I've reached out again to Peter Scanlon, who should be back from vacation now.
Matt, this looks promising, thanks! I like the push-button idea, and I think I like your Frankenstein-switch idea a lot. It suggests the kind of "mad science" that we love to promote in our group. :)
I will report back ASAP on whether we are going to seriously consider changing the name.
Thanks,
Dave

A project using emscripten just asked if we have a logo - they want to show it on their demo. It's a 3D game engine so could be a nice demo (I haven't seen it yet).
If there is no news om a name change, could we perhaps reopen this to make a logo using the current name?

There is very good progress on the project mentioned in the last comment, and will likely have a public demo soon. It would be great to have a logo at that time, otherwise it will be a very impressive demo with a tiny little HTML text link to emscripten and nothing else ;)

I'm reopening the bug in case it got overlooked -- not meaning to be passive aggressive. :)
I'm with Alon: at this point I don't see the name changing, so we should just go with the name Emscripten for the logo.
Thanks,
Dave

Given that we're keeping the name, does that mean we can go with the options presented above (comment #5 and comment #6)? What other action items do we have for Matt here?
Sounds like it shouldn't be too hard to get this resolved, but want to make sure we're all on the same page as to what needs to be done.

Hmm, one possible idea I have is regarding the text. Perhaps if the "script" in emscripten were a different color, that would be useful for people to understand more quickly what the project does. Just a thought though, I don't know if it could work well or not.
I wouldn't try to overcommunicate what it does in the logo itself; what's there (especially the second one) is nice and clean, and would look good for example show as part of a game's opening/closing credits :)

I still like the pushbutton, but I'm also curious to see the Dr. Frankenstein-switch idea Matt mentioned in comment #4 as well. Would that still be possible to sketch out?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi guys,
I've had some time work out another option which plays into the 'switch' idea, although it is not quite the old school look of a frankenstein switch, I thought it could be a more modern and simple approach to the idea. I've attached a detailed concept as well as a concept with reduced colours. Please let me know what you think of this direction.
Cheers,
Matt

I like the round button much more msyelf -- but what about using the lightning bolt inside the round button instead of the e? Or combining them and having the swoop of the e turn into a lightning bolt? (maybe rotate it 30 or so degrees clockwise?)

Hey guys, in an effort to not put too many cooks into the kitchen, I'm going to stay out of the decision making as I think all the logos so far are quality and I trust the feedback coming will lead to a good result. With that said, I would like to drive this forward as we have announcements coming and the urgency to get this done is growing.
Are there any new ideas coming or are people gravitating towards and idea?

All the previous ideas looked good to me, slight preference to the one in comment 19. If there is still time it would be nice to see something based on vlad's suggestions in comment 20.

We want to use a logo in the near future. If we can't do anything new quickly here, I am happy with the top logo in comment 19, looks great I think.

Hi guys, sorry but Matt is pretty heads down right now on another project. He might be able to make some time in the coming week or two to make some edits to polish and wrap this up, but I dont' think he will be able to make major changes in the timeframe we have. If you're happy with the logo presented in comment #19 then perhaps we can move forward with that? Please let us know. It would also help to know when your deadline is.
We're about to do a bunch of announcements and marketing over the next few months that will feature Emscripten; the first one will coincide with Firefox 19 at the start of February. So we need to have these assets done by then. If Alon is happy with 19, let's go with that, otherwise we should find someone with cycles to do a couple more quick iterations.

Since that stuff is pretty close, sounds like we should go with the top logo in 19.

Hi everyone,
Here is the final look and feel for the emscripten logo. I apologize for not having the time to work a few more versions based on some of the feedback. As Tara has said I wouldn't have the availability to address this until early next week.
Cheers,
Matt

An SVG version would be great as well, if that is possible.

Hi guys,
I've attached a zip with some various formats of the logo, including, transparent EPS, SVG and the Illustrator file.
Let me know if you have any problems with them.
Cheers,
Matt

Is it just me, or did the SVG lose a lot of depth? The EPS seems to have less gamma.
