Details
Now that we are using Android NDK r8c (bug 816993), we should investigate link-time and whole program optimizations available in gcc 4.6 that were not in gcc 4.4.
See gcc's -flto documentation for more info:
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.6.3/gcc/Optimize-Options.html#Optimize-Options

When I push this to try it fails to build [1] for some reason I cannot figure out. When I build it locally I get all manner of internal compiler errors in gcc.

AFAIK, LTO doesn't work quite well on gcc 4.6. It's better with 4.7, but it might ICE or OOM on our build enironments.
