comments on the patch:

these files need newlines at the end of the file:
tasksoverlay.css
/cvsroot/mozilla/themes/modern/editor/resources.xml,
/cvsroot/mozilla/themes/modern/messenger/resources.xml,v

and why are you removing the statusbar binding from globalbindings.xml?

ooh my eyes hurt....

r=andreww pending those nits
my only nitpick is, for example, in browser, the background image i get when i
click on the print icon (and don't let go the mousebutton). The darker bit does
not reach the left bar (the bar you get when you hover over it). Is this on purpose?
I just wish ALL the icons would act like the navigation buttons when you mouse
over them. Need to get rid of the vertical lines that surround the print icon
on the browser screen and all the vertical (divider?) lines around the icons on
the mail/news screen, etc. Would be more pleasing to the eye. Other than thet,
everything looks good. I think that would make the theme more complete.
Just downloaded Win32 Nightly build 2001062806.

Can I post my comments on the new Modern theme changes here?
Or should I start another bug? Or should I bark on the newsgroup?
Stop button in browser lights up cyan, but in mail it lights up red (how it
showld be, I think).
Current Linux CVS:
Browser icon at bottom left on status-bar is now a Netscape logo with tooltip
"Navigator".
there will hopefully be at least one more update so last night's isn't the final.
the next one will get the nav print button, the mail stop button, and a few other
odd things fixed
First impressions of the new theme touches:
- Love the new sidebar tabs
- Like the new navigator, mail, composer, address book icons (but old ones
weren't bad)
- scrollbars are ok though a little dark (the previous one looked better IMO but
I do like the thinner scrollbar in the sidebar)
- don't like the new page load status bar as much as the previous iteration may
if the finished loading bar was in 3d or lighter it would look better
- lastly the horizontal line through the envelope, address book, etc icons look
like a mistake

Also, hopefully the new navigator print button Marlon mentions doesn't have the
vertical border lines in the mouseover state. Looks fine in mail and composer
but out of place in navigator.
I like the new Modern, however, shouldn't the Netscape Logo in the lower left be
replaced by something Mozilla themed? Such as the head of mozilla?

The ships wheel that was there was more neutral (eventhough it was still a
remnant of the Netscape days...).
I have to say I've always eventually liked the iterations modern has gone
through, but this is the first time I've felt it has taken steps backward.

Likes: The cool, lit up look of the sidebar tabs. Looks like something from
movies or anime. Also, the scrollbars, checkbox widgets, and radio buttons look
a lot nicer.

Dislikes:
A) Everything is bland. All color has been removed from the mailnews buttons
and quicklaunch buttons (the ones in the bottom left corner).

B) The new progress bar (in the bottom of the browser) looks less refined and
more choppy.

C) The new quicklaunch buttons are dull, and IMHO, the address book and editor
buttons aren't obvious as to what they open. (the new composer button looks
like the old addressbook button due to the round globe vs the old @ symbol)
Also, the netscape logo should only be in NS6.x, but even then I don't think
it's as nice as the good old wheel for netscape.

D) The little right-click/alternate arrows in the forward, back, print, and Get
Msg buttons. I guess there was a demand to make them more defined and easily
clickable, but I think they looked much better when they were integrated smoothly.

E) The lines that run across the tops of messenger apps now overlap the
background images. This looks especially bad with the envelope in messenger.

I've also noticed that under the right side scrollbar, if you minimize a page so
you also get the bottom horizontal scrollbar at the same time (bottom right
corner), where they meet you have a white empty square. Either the bottom
scrollbar should adjust to move over, or the right vertical scrollbar should
adjust to move down
> Left window corner with empty white space
It happens BEFORE landing these changes, in fact.

The address book quick launch icon should be redone. It now looks like a
computer chip. Also, may be the pencil should be added back to the composer icon
to better illustrate what it is.
the security icon looks broken when beeing red.
the new progressbar looks ugly compared to the old 3d-ish one. The "old" one
probably fits better to the 3d-ish look of modern3 and the new icons. Of course,
if there is an even better progress bar planned, just ignore me :-)
(Linux 2001062821). I hope, I did not sound to negativ, other things (like the
preferences) look somewhat more professional now :-)
the security icon IS broken when seeing red! (whew, at least we're doing one
thing right)

Sidebar Tabs:

GOOD: The Lighting part seems to be liked by many (not me).

BAD: The Form is linear & angular. It does NOT match with the rest of the theme.

There must be some way to keep the diode-like effect (what users like) and make
the shape more rounded (fit to rest of theme).

A minor issue, but should be fixed nonetheless. The background color of the "my
sidebar" block does not exactly match the new sidebar tabs. The color is close
but when you have several tabs lined up below it, the difference in color is
more noticeable.

Can I just say using a 'brand-name' style icon for Navigator (currently the
Netscape 'N' but according to Marlon in bug 88279 he's gonna make one based on
the Mozilla 'M' throbber) this is bad for the following reasons:
1) Mozilla is the full app suite, as is Netscape in the commercially branded
product, associating the browser with the logo for the entire app suite is just
stupid.
2) It makes branding for other distributors more difficult (e.g. Beonex will
need to create their own logo for this icon)
3) Users of Netscape 4.x and below, as well as users of Netscape 6
(modern/classic) and the classic skin on current mozillas have all seen the use
of a ships wheel used to represent a web browser.
4) The old taskbar icons were better anyways :)
having speant a bit of time working on beonex, it's not a big deal.

Ok i retract this comment. many thanks to buggage1999@hotmail.com since i had
_never_ seen the logo everyone was complaining about.

Mozilla Navigator and Netscape Navigator and Beonex Navigator are the same
component, changing the icon based on the branding is bad. It's easy for me to
make 32x32 images from beonex, but making a 11x8 or something image is not.

I have a patched splash.rc, and a patched jar.mn which distributes replacement
throbbers.

I'm more concerned about the installer, which references
'mozilla-win32-installer.exe' in some places even though the file it generates
is named differently, and which has a raptor logo
(mozilla\xpinstall\wizard\windows\setuprsc) -- This would be an easy fix _if_
beonex had a vertical critter.

Of course, i'm still confused because i don't know what this bug is about.

I do know someone complained that they couldn't tell online from offline. -- I
can find the bug number if anyone cares. -- This is a valid concern.

Address book should either have a head or look like some part of a rolodex
(tm?).
The problems I saw with the bottom "quick launch" buttons were the browser icon
(netscpe N) a. doesn't match the style of the other three and b. is a Netscape
icon in Mozilla, the mail icon (envelope) is larger than the rest and sticks
out, and the other two icons are hard to tell what they are or what they're
suppose to represent.

That's just my opinion. I thought the older ones where fine; you could easily
tell what they were for and they all matched with the same style.
Testing on trunk and internal testing of skin package on branch complete. Looks
safe and ready to checkin. Marking nsBranch+

Latest changes are now on trunk and branch. There may be a few more to come, so
I'll leave this bug open for now.
Can anyone comment on the reason why the taskbar icons for Mozilla have changed
from the original modern 3 icons which looked a lot better for all the applications.
all fixed now on trunk and branch

The statusbar apps icons still look like **** because:

- the *browser icon* use the "m" icon which is symbolic of the entire
application and not just the browser. (This is a SERIOUS *correctness* bug)

- the *mail icon* is the only icon that looks half-descent (a bit too
rectangular, too few distinguishing details)

- the *composer icon*: what the #&$§" is that circle on the top left for? Lose
it, please.

- the *address book icon* is the worst of the four. It looks too blurry and the
"portrait" only looks like a portrait to people who already know it's a portrait
- get it? Loose the lines on the left and make the circle of the head bigger and
show less of the torso.

This bug is definetely not fixed - please reopen.
Peter, I've verified all platforms (branch builds: 2001-07-13-04-0.9.2),
the statusbar apps icons << the *browser icon* use the "m" icon which is
symbolic of the entire application and not just the browser. (This is a SERIOUS
*correctness* bug)>> It seems to appear to me that the browser icon "N", not "m"
though.

it's a non-capitalized "m" (not an "N"). I can't believe you've used so much
space to point that out (and wrongly, even). Maybe I just didn't understand your
"sentence" correctly. ;)
Peter, if you read my comment, I said the 'browser icon' for statusbar is
"N" that I saw on the branch build (2001-07-13-03-0.9.2). But you complained
that is no-capitalized "m", i could not reproduce it on my side. Hopefully
you should understand what I'm talking about now.
m=mozilla.   n=netscape.
It is a lowercase m (same as throbber) in 2001071304, and has been for me for
quite a while on win2k.

How about the Gekko for an image to represent the browser? Although I bet you
can't make it look good at that size...
William, what platform? I just verified again on the Mac (trunk build: 2001-07-
13-03-0.9.2), the throbber is fine "N". Hummm, I still can not reproduce it.
Marlon, can you reproduce it?
sorry, I meant trunk build (2001-07-13-08-trunk), not (trunk build: 2001-07-
13-03-0.9.2).
I can't see what's wrong with using the ship's wheel for Navigator - it's served
us well since 2.0 (or was it 1.1?)
when you get the build from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/
and download this file: mozilla-win32-installer-sea.exe
then the statusbar browser icon is a "m".
patty - i am just saying that it should be the Mozilla "M" on mozilla builds,
and the Netscape "N" on commercial. i do not check the mozilla nightly builds
too often so i cannot verify. This is temporary until we have time to create a
higher quality shipswheel which works well at both the 14px toolbar size, and is
appropriate for other uses as well. This however doesn't have to be the case
for Mozilla, only commercial.
The statusbar icon to load the BROWSER part of Mozilla should most definetely
NOT be the "m" icon, since the "m" symbolizes the WHOLE application and not just
the BROWSER module.

I suggest we DO use the ship wheel in Mozilla to pay homage to the roots of the
Mozilla project ;)
then go ahead and make it a ships wheel genius
I just talked to Marlon and Joe H. a few mintues ago, this bug is fixed.
If someone does not think this bug is fixed, file a bug separately or
talk to Joe H. Thanks.
