We just shipped 17.0.8, and the nightly version is 17.0.8esrpre instead of 17.0.9esrpre. The template doesn't take account of incrementing the version of the current release at http://hg.mozilla.org/build/buildbot-configs/file/5701eb77c611/mozilla/release-firefox-mozilla-esr17.py.template#l38

I think this has been a longstanding issue that we've decided not to care about...if someone wants to fix it, the templates need to use {{ nextVersion }} (or something similar) and substituteReleaseConfig (https://github.com/mozilla/build-tools/blob/master/lib/python/release/config.py) needs to be taught how to calculate it. I think https://github.com/mozilla/build-tools/blob/master/lib/python/build/versions.py has a method that might help there.
