When double-clicking on a unified contact to start a conversation (which means the user doesn't care about which account is used to make the connection), the last few messages shown (context) should be gathered from all the accounts of this contact.
This would enable a quick overview of the previous messages from that person.
A difficulty will be also doing this for IRC contacts, where the corresponding messages would have to be extracted from the logs of all the channels that account is connected to.

I don't like the idea of pulling messages from MUCs and displaying them as if they're private messages. I agree that we should really integrate the logs of a unified contact better though.

I agree they shouldn't be displayed as if they were private messages. If MUCs were to be included, they would have to be visually offset in some fashion ("Peter said on #developers:") so it is clear there is context that is not displayed, and you'd have to be able to click on that to display the corresponding log. Certainly difficult to get right... I didn't intend my comment to be a finished proposal.

On the behalf of Florian:
Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
