Details
(Whiteboard: [passwords:master-password] Believed to be caused by Sync and a homepage requesting access to saved passwords)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140309030204 Steps to reproduce: Opened Firefox Nightly with master password enabled. Popup for Pocket add-on appeared on-screen, was dismissed. Was prompted for master password. Entered master password. Actual results: Was prompted for master password a second time in a row. Expected results: Shouldn't have been asked a second time for master password.
David: Does this happen again if you use Firefox in Safe mode? This may be something to do with your Pocket add-on.

Liz, I will attempt to reproduce the error in safe mode when I get home. Also, I have noticed over the past couple one days that this happens in Firefox 27 as well, not just Nightly.

Okay, I believe I have found the cause of the bug! When Firefox is started with both Pocket and Greasemonkey, I am prompted for my master password twice. When Firefox is started with any one of these plugins alone, I am prompted for my master password once. When Firefox is started without either of these plugins, I am not prompted for my master password until I visit a site which has a password stored for it (eg. Twitter, Facebook etc.)

I have also encountered this bug without any extensions. My usecase: Latest nightly on windows 7. Master password enabled. Sync enabled A homepage requesting authentication (login / password) which is stored in the password manager A first windows prompts me for masterpassword and a second one pops a few seconds later (I only have time to type a few characters in the first one). It does not matter in which window I type the master password, it works for both (usually, I cancel the first one and type it in the second one). It's the same in safe mode or with a new profile (only sync and this homepage with password saved). It should only ask once for the master password.

The same behaviour is seen with the password manager of thunderbird-daily 50.0a1 (2016-06-14) with all add-ons disabled on linux. It also ”forgets“ the master password when I enter it correctly and then click on cancel in the second dialogue. This can be confusing and annoying.

I was getting duplicate prompts until a week or two ago with Firefox Nightly, but the behavior has changed in the past week or so. I may still get duplicate prompts if I wait long enough but I haven't seen it for a few days. There also appears to have been a change in when the password prompts appears (it shows up later), but I can't tell whether that is a Nightly change or a change in the behavior in the web sites in my pinned tabs. There are three bugs on this issue. I'll let someone else decide which should be marked as duplicate. Bug 794736: Firefox/Security: Two master password popup windows come up Bug 981579: Toolkit/Password Manager: Asked for master password twice Bug 1176399: MainNews Core/Networking: Multiple requests for master password when GMail OAuth2 is enabled
