Some sites expect scripts from Google ad servers to load, or they break. Simply pretending these scripts have loaded tends to fix them. Two scripts which seem related are:
https://static.adsafeprotected.com/vans-adapter-google-ima.js
https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/
It may also be necessary to proxy the ads theselves in some cases (content from https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ads)
