This is a tracking bug for the tweaks suggested to make 1.5 more user-friendly. The fact that a bug is a dependency of this one does not mean that it blocks 1.5, or will necessarily be fixed in 1.5. Please nominate dependencies in comments or the newsgroup discussion rather than adding (or removing) them. Gerv

Adding a bunch of simple UI cleanups suggested by Pascal Chevrel. Gerv

Bug 36816: With that users won't have to enter user name and password for each newsgroup they read, but only once per server. Bug 45375: Tooltips for title attributes must be displayed in full. Major usability and accessibility issue. Bug 170206: Mozilla alert steals focus from other applications. This way if you type in another application you can just dismiss a Mozilla dialog popping up in front of you. Bug 201966: Unix users cannot install extensions most of the time due to permissions if not root (and you don't want to surf as root). Bug 144998: By adding additional blank lines this bugs makes Mozilla users look like lusers. Bug 11076: This makes mails or news articles totally unusable if called by ID. pi
OK, here are my suggestions for making Mozilla 1.5 more "user-friendly": - *quote level colors* turned on by default. A sensible, conservative default would be better than what we have now (namely nothing). The instructions are here: http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/tips.html#app_quotelevels - "Close Other Tabs" Needs a Confirmation Dialog (patch is almost done) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191578 - If a message is determined to be "Junk" (spam), just show simple html or plain text - don't load remote images (Thunderbird already has this) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=179568 - View -> Messages -> Watched Threads (ALL - not just the unread ones) (easy fix?) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73562 - "Paste without Formatting" (plain text) on context menus and edit menu (already implemented in Composer, need in *e-mail* compose) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64647 BONUS REQUEST: - Ignore (kill) a Branch of a Thread (not just the whole thread) (Troll) (OK, this one needs a lot of work, but it would be *way cool* to have) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11054
another batch : bug 214223 The IM-icon isn't active at all in Mozilla, so we should grey it out completely. bug 214225 We're still including the AIM-icon. It should at least be the generic IM-icon, greyed out or not. bug 212851 we might install a smaller send/receive buffer than offered by the OS. bug 201511 autocomplete should select addresses from the personal AB before the Collected AB bug 197138 don't create the Collected AB by default (default settings don't even use it) I would have nominated bug 149567 too (FAQ-link in the Help menu), but that FAQ-link is hopelessly outdated ...
bug 13595: Add birthday field to address book UI (has patch, needs review)
Gerv, I have two bug more for you: Bug 107380 - remove res/throbber from the distribution. Bug 156747 - remove res/sample from the distribution This is user-friendly because it reduces the size of the downloading package by nearly 200K and the disk footprint by nearly 500K without any loss of functionality. This stuff might be needed in developer trunk builds (just like the debug menuitems), but not in enduser-oriented release builds.
sipaq: Good choices. We like those :-) Gerv

Knocking off bug 218336 and bug 218329 - we aren't doing those. Gerv
No longer depends on: 218329, 218336
Bug 179578 will also have to wait. It's more a feature than a usability tweak. Gerv
No longer depends on: 179578
Depends on: 214225
May I suggest another bug from the bloat-reduction-front: bug 193740 - move timebomb stuff to mozilla/extensions or get totally rid of it
Suggesting bug 200136 (having a patch awaiting review). Currently, the UI pretends to be able to create and execute smartfind queries, but it isn't. I consider this a severe "user-friendlyness" bug. As long as the smartfind backend is broken, the UI should be changed. The patch will remove the UI that creates bookmark smartfind queries.
Bug 200136 added. Re: 193740 - the code volume is probably small, and there's no patch, so let's pass on that one. Gerv
Depends on: 200136
Bug 36816 news should use the server's username / password when authenticating This bug is fixed on trunk already. It avoids nagging users all the time about logins for single groups on a newsserver. pi
Bug 62010 Back menu session history should be unbounded This patch makes the latest entries in the history more accessible. Now you are very limited which makes it almost impossible to get back out of some sites (especially if the use frames). Bug 111855 first group not read on news server with login This has a working patch. Now the first group on a newsserver with login is not read and has to be chosen manually, not really user-friendly. pi
I will say: bug #125998 (when viewing a picture, the "site icon" should display a thumbnail of that picture). Look at the attachments in this bug (the "before" / "after"). It can be nice. It's very "user friendly". Users will *see* it and will say "it's cool". The positive feedback will be fast.
Gervase, are you still taking input here? If so... bug 160694 - Page Info should not have a Help button (has patch, needs driving)
No longer depends on: 206103
1.5 is out of the door. Moving to 1.6?
Summary: More user-friendly 1.5 tracking bug → More user-friendly 1.7 tracking bug
Bug 158679 Shortcut keys do not work if caps lock on
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105885 reorder/rearrange tabs in tabbed browser
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129726 option to send URL as UTF-8 It is a must for the most asian users.
Suggesting bug 201966: Most extensions can not be installed, if you are not admin. (This applies not only to Linux, but also to Mac OS and probably Win2000/XP too.
proposing Bug 240412 (browser.translation.service : syntax error in default value)
May I propose bug #245707 or bug #241490 - calendar tool does not pop up alarm window. This bug is fixed, but the fix is not in rc3.
(In reply to comment #23) > May I propose bug #245707 or bug #241490 - calendar tool does not pop up alarm > window. This bug is fixed, but the fix is not in rc3. has been checked in 1.7 branch now if everything goes right
