adobe hangs instead of correctly displaying pdf.
only happens in firefox. does not happen in IE.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. go to www.heroscape.net to the download/scenarios section and attempt to
download the "lavascape" pdf file. The direct url is:
http://www.heroscape.net/PostNuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index
2. Observe that two pages download and then adobe either hangs or errors out.
3. Do the same action in I.E. 6+ and Adobe loads the PDF without error.
Actual Results:
it downloads the first two pages and then hangs.
have observed this on other pdf's on other web pages two.
basic problem with adobe through firefox.
Expected Results:
load all 8 pages and display them.

This happens for me as well. I am running FF 1.0 final and Adobe Acrobat Reader
v6.0 on XP.
It seems that FF freezes/blocks when I try to scroll to a page that has not been
downloaded yet. In IE the plugin displays the pages as they are downloaded and
if I attempt to scroll to a section that has not completed yet blank grey page
outlines are displayed.

Can you try using reader v7?
Same problem for me - using Adrobe reader 7.0 on Win XP and Win 2000 It just
doesn't open the pdf file.

I have the same problem: when I try to download a pdf file from a website,
Firefox opens a new window, it stays blank, and that's it (no download). IE
downloads perfectly. I am using the firefox I downloaded on Jan 19, 2005, and
Adobe Professional 6.0. Thx. Brenda

More information:
Here's the software that the author used to create the pdf file document that
doesn't open in Firefox. As it only crashes on some sorts of pdf files and not
others, this may be a key item:
"it's Ghostscript 8.11 and GSview 4.5"

Oops, forgot to explicitly mention that I'm using Adobe 7.0 not 6.*
Would be useful to explore the possibility of incorporating the Opera browser
model for opening Adobe Acrobat/PDF files? While IE and Firefox have both
consistently given trouble re: PDF files, Opera is remarkably smooth.
just a suggestion

The main cause of PDF problems in Firefox are that the PDF association in
FireFox gets doubled up on if you have a previous version of the Acrobat reader
in FF and then upgrade to a newer one - both associations are left in FF and FF
gets confused as to which version of the reader to use so it locks up. The
simple solution is to remove the association in FF with the old PDF reader and
then install the new version.

This problem can be circumvented by changing the download manager's history
setting to remove files from the download manager "upon successful download",
from the default setting "manually". I tested this circumvention with Firefox
1.0.4 in SuSE Linux, WinXP and 2k (both at SP2). More complete instructions to
verify the problem, fix, and verify the circumvention are at

How do you do that, exactly?

It happens to me in FF 1.05 aswell. It did it at this URL:

Works fine in IE.

confirmed against ff 1.0.6
deerpark shows similar behaviour: when opening a pdf it just shows either a
black or grey page and kills the right mouse button and all the hotkeys.
it seems to happen randomly, because some pdf's are working fine.

This is a regression. Without changing Acrobat, switching from a pre 20050816
build to a 20050820+ build shows this problem. Not sure of the exact build
dates, but the regression window is somewhere close to those dates.

This is pretty serious. It has stopped all use of Firefox here in the office as
PDFs are unuseable. Not only does FF freeze, but all the toolbar icons disappear
and the system is generally hung at that point.

Problem when 6.0 is probably DUP of Bug 214137 (already WORKSFORME since resolved by 6.0.1).

To bugs@gbrt2004.co.uk, Edmund R. Kennedy, and DZ :
Problem when Adobe Reader 7.0(or later) is probably diffrent issue, since problem when Adobe Reader 6.0(.0) was resolved by Adobe Acrobat 6.0.1.
Problem when Adobe Reader 7.x is better to be handled in separate bug.
See dependency tree of Bug 336184 (Meta bug for hang/freeze/crash with Adobe Reader plugin), and comment to appropriate bug if you are still experencing hang/freeze/crash with newest Adobe Reader 7.x.
Summary: Adobe acrobat "hangs" when downloading pdf in FF only. Works in IE. → Adobe acrobat "hangs" when downloading pdf in FF only. Works in IE. (Adobe Acrobat 6.0)

If the issue with Acrobat 6 is bug 214137, and the issue with Acrobat 7.0 is not this bug, what is this bug?

(In reply to comment #20)
I couldn't find older bug than Bug 290682(opened on 2005-04-17) for hang/crash when Adobe Acrobat/Reader 7.0.x (see dependency tree of Bug 336184).
So Comment #5(on 2005-01-15) looks for me to be the first problem report on Adobe Acrobat/Reader 7.0.0.
Jerry Baker, do you think this bug is better to be kept open as bug report for problem when Adobe Acrobat/Reader 7.0.0(and later)?

Oh, sorry, your Comment #16 was in this bug.
I knew about your finding of Comment #16 by comment in a bug report of Bugzilla Japan, but I missed it was comment in this bug.
Jerry Baker, is your Comment #16 for Adobe Reader 7.0.0 or later? or for Adobe Acrobat (Reader) 6.0.x? Or for both?
Is this bug for regression of Firefox(your comment Comment #16) which is common for Firefox with Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.x and Firefox with Adobe Reader 7.x?
Should we test combination of Firefox pre 20050816 build and Adobe Reader 7.0.5/7.0.7?

Since (1) No response from bug opener about PDF plugin version, (2) Many valuable comments on 7.0.0, (3) Commnet #5 looks to be first report about 7.0, (4) Finding about regression of Firefox by comment #16,
I believe this bug is to be kept as (first) bug for 7.0 related problem.
Changing summary(6.0 => 7.0.0).
To all comment posters on 6.0(.0):
Problem when Adobe Acrobat (Reader) 6.0.0 is DUP of Bug 214137.
See Bug 214137, please.

I solved this problem:- I use adobe Acrobat Professional and had blank pages only come up when clicking on PDF downloads.
Solution:- go to this URL and download addon plugin https://addons.mozilla.org/addon.php?id=636
plus open Adobe and EDIT/Preferences/Internet - uncheck "display PDF in Browser"
Worked for me!!
This should also work for anyone who only has the READER installed.

Hi guys, this PDF document was not loading - no problem except that I could not quit out of this tab.
I tried escape, the stop button everything. It was constantly busy!
Then I realized something else....
There was an Adobe error dialog that says there was an error loading the document, but I could not get focus to it!
Not alt-tab for refocusing, not by clicking it!
NOTE: Mouse cursor was a constant hour glass, in firefox.
Windows make window button did not work (between minimize and close).
Windows Close button [x] gives the typical application not responding error!
When I closed it off I got the typical report to Microsoft error.

Same question as Bug 351762.
Does your crash or hang or freeze occur even after Adobe Reader 8.1?
Comment 35•17 years ago

I've tested with FF 2.0.4/Adobe Reader 8.1 on Windows XP Pro SP2 and the problem seems to be gone. I upgraded from Adobe Reader 7.0 where I had the problem.

Under FF 2.0.0.8 Adobe reader 8.1 on Windows XP SP2, the problem sill remain. Downloading a pdf file pointed in a page make the browser bugging.

To BABINET:
As seen in dependency tree for meta bug 336184, crash/freeze with Adobe Reader 8.x is very few (I know problem of Bug 383826 and following crash of Bug 368821 only). This bug is for crash/freeze in 7.0.x era. If crash/freeze when Adobe Reader 8.x can be observed frequently with specifc site, open separate bug with setting 336184 in "Blocks:", please.

I've got Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on Firefox 3.0. FF hangs when I try to scroll down the document before it finishes loading. No error dialogs show up even when I force quit.
When I reload the page and wait for the file to cache I don't get any hangs. If I exit FF, restart and reload the page I can scroll with no hangs. So, once the pdf file is cached there's no problem.
I'll try comment #28's solution and report back.
Comment 41•16 years ago
|
||
Well, comment #28's link is broken. Unchecking "Display PDF in Browser" of course stopped displaying pdf's in the browser. Rechecking it allowed pdf's. That's about it. The problem still exists.
For anyone else reporting a pdf problem. As in #40, if the full pdf file loads
and gets cached it will no longer show the problem. Make sure you clear the cache before retrying the file. You may think the problem is solved when it isn't.

To raymond shpeley:
As you say, PDF related hang/freeze/crash still remains even after Adobe Reader 8, but it seems to be limited to special situations such as your "scroll
down the document before it finishes loading".
I could find only following three reports of "PDF related hang/freeze/crash" after Adboe Reader 8.
1. Bug 383826(PDF download error) then Bug 368821(Crash),
when test case of Bug 368821(many IFRAMEs with PDF).
2. Yours : Hang when "scroll down the document before it finishes loading".
3. Bug 429242 : Hang when quick cancel after PDF link click.
See dependency tree for Bug 336184.
Closing as WORKSFORME, based on many answers to my question of comment #34.
(no need to track Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 & Adobe Reader 7 problems any more)
