Junk mail configuration options don't seem to be independent. On manual marking of junk, the 'move to junk folder' action doesn't take place unless the 'Move incoming messages determined to be junk' config option is set.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open 'Junk Mail Controls' under 'Tools'
2. Uncheck 'Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to'
3. Check 'When I manually mark messages as Junk' and choose the 'Move them to Junk Folder' option
4. Click OK.
4. Move a piece of junk mail into the inbox
5. Mark it as junk.
Actual Results:
Junk mail is still in inbox.

Expected Results:
Junk mail would be moved to Junk folder.

If you have either 'Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to' checked or the 'Delete Them' option chosen for 'When I manually mark messages as Junk', the app behaves as expected (in the first case, the junk is moved to the Junk folder, in the second the junk mail is deleted).

I'm using Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 on Windows XP. I am accessing a POP inbox with about 400 messages.

Adaptive filter is enabled. This is a new install and has only probably recieved 30 messages to train it.

These are junk settings for 'Local Folders'. Every other Junk option was set to the default.
Is auto-detected junk moved as expected?

*Do* you have it set up to move auto-detected junk? xref bug 217528. If that isn't your situation, then see bug 279018.

No because....

No. In step 2 in the steps to reproduce, I turn off the auto detected junk move; that's the option I refer to as 'Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to'.

I took a look at both those bugs. bug 217258 doesn't seem to apply, as mentioned above.

bug 279018 is described as "when I mark a message as Junk, it is not moved to the Junk folder", that is, the manual marking fails to move the message everytime.

(The only fix I saw was to put the full hostname for the imap server (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=279018#c29) which doesn't apply to my situation because I'm connecting to a pop server. I also looked at some of the dups of bug 279018 (bug 299826, bug 308411), but they seem to be related to having the adaptive filter turned off, and I have it turned on.)

That's not the case here: if you have the 'Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to' option checked, the manual marking *does* move the message to the Junk folder. If not, the move does not happen.

Yes, of course you did -- I missed that entirely, sorry.

Assuming the bug number you typed is a typo (it's not the same as mine), I don't know why you think it doesn't apply. On the contrary, I think this bug is a dupe of 217528.

Yup, bug number was a typo.

Re-reading bug 217258, especially <a href='https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217528#c16'>comment 16</a> and <a href='https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217528#c17'>comment 17</a>, I agree this is a duplicate.

I'm a bit confused about the product/component of bug 217528: Core/MailNews::Backend, but will mark this as a duplicate.

Core just means it's shared between the suite and Thunderbird. Perhaps that bug should be Core::MailNews:Filters instead.
