Using jun21 m17 commercial build
When offline, 4.x used to display a status bar text message "You are offline.
Choose 'Go Online' to connect". This was in addition to the tooltip when
mousing over the offline icon, and in addition to the message which would
display in the message pane when trying to display a message which had not been
previously downloaded.
This status bar message appeared when switching to the offline state via menu or
icon and was present if starting in offline state. It would display any time
you selected another message after any other loading status was finished. This
same status bar message transferred through to other dialogs/windows such as the
subscribe dialog, search messages, etc. It was an easy way to remind the user in
a textual way in any situation that they were offline.
Logging this as a tracking bug -- are we going to do this for 6.0? I think we
should.

I'll work on getting some of this implemented.

this should actually happen everywhere, not just in mailnews. I'm not sure who
handles offline. I'll start with Networking.

Please don't do this. I spend most of my time offline, and I don't want `You
are offline. Choose "Work Online" to connect.' staring me in the face all the
time.
4.x's offline icon wasn't noticably different from its online icon -- it wasn't
different in color, and was pretty similar in shape. A more noticable offline
icon (e.g. one with a small red cross through it) would make it much more
noticable when you were offline, without being annoying (see also bug 60147 and
bug 88569). Why not fix the icon instead? (And of course fix bugs like bug
90489.)

Question, did some one land this change?
I noticed with today's trunk
builds 2001-08-06-09-trunk for windows and
2001-08-06-08-trunk for linux/mac that
there is text to the right of the online/offline
icon. See attachment.

found someone already filed a bug about it, bug 93936.
But not where it 'came from'.

The text should not be there. Only on hover should the text appear in a
tooltip.

I saw it on Asa's build.
It is definitely text by the button, not just a tool tip. It also appears in
browser.

I agree with Matthew that this would be annoying. And Jennifer seemed to
suggest that we shouldn't do this, except in a tooltip. IE doesn't do this.
Marking wontfix unless someone has strong feelings...

This problem might be solvable via better support for a "network profile" (bug
88218).

If one is offline and composes a mail message, the only way of going online so
as to send the message seems to be to go to the main mail or the Navigator
window, click the on-/offline icon or choose 'online' in the File menu, go back
to the 'Compose' window and send.
Very clumsy. It should be possible to click the on-/offline icon or choose
'online' directly from the 'Compose' window.
I am using Mozilla 1.1 on a Mac G3 (old beige type) with OS 9.2.2 and Classic theme.

we have autodetect of offline status now, which should ameliorate this issue. However, the compose window still doesn't have an offline indicator/toggle on it. Assigning to nobody...
