Ordinary toolbar buttons (that is, those which can contain an icon, such as `Back', `Forward', `Reload', etc) should use the thinnest variant of the Mac OS standard `bevel button' border, as shown in the URL. This style is considerably more professional than the 4.x-style border which is used currently, and would make the toolbars in the Mac Classic skin look more Mac-like than in any other major Mac browser.

good recommendation, i don't know if we have time for it though. downgrading to trivial.

Reassigning all Nikhil's bugs to me as he is no longer here.

Hmm, the point of the classic skin is to mimic 4.x as closely as possible. Although also having the mac look and feel. Will query with UI folks.

So you're trying to duplicate the look of 4.x, bug-for-bug? (The un-Mac-like appearance of the toolbar buttons in 4.x is trivial, but it's a bug.) At various times I have seen explanations of Classic which include: * imitate 4.x as closely as possible * imitate Mozilla Classic as closely as possible * look as native as possible for each platform. I think the last explanation makes the most sense from a user's point of view. But if that's not what Classic is for, then I'll have to go reopen bug 48032, and for each platform we'll need two skins which are almost identical except for the bits where 4.x (or Mozilla Classic) looked un-Mac-like. And nobody will use Classic any more, because the new skin will look more Mac-like. See the Mac's Help Viewer for an example of a toolbar with these buttons.

Themes Triage Team marking invalid. The Mac Classic skin is supposed to look like Mac 4.x product. If someone would like to build a skin that looks correct for the Mac I would be very happy to see that...

Ok, I checked with Ben Goodger, who created Classic. He said that Classic is supposed to look like `a *contemporary native application* on the OS it runs on -- not like 4.x'. If you disagree, and you want Classic to look like 4.x, please file bugs for the Mac Classic skin to do the following: * make the menus white with black selection highlighting (like 4.x) instead of gray with colored selection highlighting (like modern Mac OS apps and the current Classic skin); * make the scrollbar thumb square (like 4.x) instead of proportionally rectangular (like modern Mac OS apps and the current Classic skin) when Smart Scrolling is turned on; * make text fields look identical with and without focus (like 4.x), instead of having focus rings (like modern Mac OS apps and the current Classic skin); * make cookie confirmation dialogs white (like 4.x) instead of gray (like modern Mac OS apps and the current Classic skin); * make trees -- such as the the folder and thread panes in Messenger, the history window, the bookmarks window, etc -- white (like 4.x) instead of gray (like modern Mac OS apps and the current Classic skin). Until those bugs are filed, I can't take the idea seriously that Classic is supposed to repeat all of 4.x's faults.

Would it be possible to use real Aqua toolbars for Mozilla's toolbars? (In the same way Moz's menubars use the real Mac menubar.) Then nobody could say the toolbars look un-Mac-like. There's a sample NSToolbar program at http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/Sample_Code/Cocoa/ToolbarSample.htm
no. if you're interested in native widgets, use Chimera. mozilla uses xpwidgets.
This bug is targeted at a Mac classic platform/OS, which is no longer supported by mozilla.org. Please re-target it to another platform/OS if this bug applies there as well or resolve this bug. I will resolve this bug as WONTFIX in four weeks if no action has been taken. To filter this and similar messages out, please filter for "mac_cla_reorg".

Still valid? The URL points to the (now defunct) OS 8 HIG. Based on the changes that are being planned for Classic on Mac, I'm not sure this is still valid. On OS X, I don't think there are any real button borders used so they'd be hard to use.
OS X does have borders for buttons in toolbars that contain few buttons; see for example Safari and Mail 2.0. But yes, I reported this bug about OS 8~9 specifically.

Since this was reported for OS 8-9 and toolbar button borders are almost gone (at least in Leopard), I'm resolving this as invalid.
