Details
(Keywords: useless-UI)
Build: 2001072008, Mac OS 9.1
To reproduce:
1. In mail/news, open the Search Messages window.
2. From the menu bar, try to open a new Navigator window (`File' > `New' >
`Navigator Window'), or switch to Composer (`Tasks' > `Composer'), or quit
Mozilla (`File' > `Quit'), or any other enabled menu item.
3. Try the equivalent keyboard shortcuts: Command+N, Command+4, Command+Q,
etc.
What should happen:
* They all work.
What actually happens:
* None of them work.

Looks similar to (possible dupe of?) bug 21296 - Can't use Mac menu bar when a
modal dialog is up.

No, it's the opposite of that bug.

OS may need to switch to all. i'm seeing this on Mac OS X, too. Build ID:
200252918 (Mozilla 1.0).
i noticed it specifically trying to close the window with Cmd-W or File->Close.

also, is the Severity really "major" for this? there's no data loss, and there's
a workaround (i.e., close the window, explicitly).

This window has one hundred and fifty-one menu items which are enabled but do
nothing at all. Yes, I consider that to be major.

Changing OS since MacOS9 is no longer supported. Can a Mac user confirm that the
bug still exists ?

in response to comment 7, this is still an issue in nightly builds of MailNews
and Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 1.5 OSX 10.4, some but not all of the same problems occur. With the Search window focused, none of the View, Go, Tools, or Window menu items work. Also could not start a new message.
However, both Close and Quit work as menu items and command keys. Therefore the bug is escapable, at least in TB.

Karsten,
similar in some ways to bug 87514 - including that not all of this is just MAC afaict. 3 distinct issues/bugs here:
* menu (Felix in bug 87514 comment 17 offers not everything need be in menu for "special purpose" windows)
* shortcut (bug 267992 is another example of shortcut issue)
* mac-issue - bug 87514 comment 2, which we perhaps overlooked in bug 87514 comment 17

Since the message search window/dialog doesn't have a menubar, you only get a application menu now. There's no such thing as a File menu etc. This is actually by Widget: Cocoa design. Before the mac menusystem re-write you did got the main application menubar (mailNews, Composer etc), but none of the menus worked. So, I'd say the problem still exists on trunk. Thunderbird doesn't seem to have a "Search Messages..." option in the menu, but for instance the filter dialog have the same problem (only a application menu). I dunno about the shortcuts, though - I can paste stuff into the search field in the dialog, so I think the basic edit shortcuts works.
Anyway, if we want the main menubar to be visible on mac when those dialogs are frontmost, we have to overlay a menubar in all menubar-less dialogs/windows.

Edit - Find - Search Messages...
Sometimes it takes me fewer than three tries to find it.
