For the build in comment 2: if you're feeling adventurous, you can go to about:config and tweak browser.newtabpage.columns and browser.newtabpage.rows to a larger number to see additional rows/columns as the space allows.

No more active development of Tiles. Anything open blocking this was WONTFIXed.
